Cleaning an aboveground area in a freezing biome.
« on: October 13, 2014, 10:49:19 pm »

Slingblock has a problem.

See all the red stuff? Not a problem; it snows frozen blood regularly.
See the gray spots? That's FB goo. I don't know how it got there, but everyone who walks outside tracks through it. It hasn't made its way inside, but if the dwarf happens to be missing foot coverings, their feet basically melt, spraying blood everywhere until the dwarf is a disgusting blob of feverish pus and blood. IT's a freezing biome, so a rinse with pumps won't work; the water would freeze nigh-instantly on the surface. I can't really move the entrance over, and dwarves won't take cleaning jobs there. What can I do?

Magma? :P

Make sure everyone wears shoes and gloves the whole time, and then drop some crossbow bolts into it. Instant blood removal gun!
(If you can't fix it, weaponize it!)

Edit: there is probably something... Build floors over it?

DFhack has a "clean all" command, if you don't mind using that. You could also just drop water on it from above, which would probably make an ice floor over it.

You could give the area a ceiling. That would mark it as inside, which in the new releases should allow cleaning labors, correct?

A dirt road may be enough.

Buildings in general seem to remove most/all floor coverings; kennels are pretty good - they clean 5x5 tiles for a single job/material.

I will admit to abusing that command, only because it sometimes heavily increases my fps.

Ah young dwarfling.
This is easy to fix.

When the dwarves walk up from the caverns and into the snow, the extract is "cleaned" from them as if they had walked into water, and is left as a containment on the ground.

Thats how it got there, now to get rid of it:

Constructed floors, or roads, under a roof. That's all. You just need to get rid of the snow and it'll solve itself. You might need to deconstruct and replace the traps after building a floor though.

Only way your going to manage it without hacking. I suggest in future you rig up your caverns with cleaning troughs (1 z level deep dips filled with 2 depth water) that the dwarves have to walk through between access to the cavern and the main fort. Behind several well placed animal proofed doors and restriction zones mind. And you'll still need foot coverings, but this system also doubles up as a good way to save you dwarven lives.

Cleaning troughs CATCH contaminents. Any non-foot-protected dwarf that goes through them[IE:Babies] WILL die. So make sure that only childless soldiers[Guaranteed to have foot protection] go through the troughs.
