Fun with water!

What have you done with water that's fun so far? I built a huge tank (10x12x8 deep, mostly higher than ground level, took a year to fill) and then set it to explode up through the ground in a 1x1 tile... it really did explode and create a tall (almost as high as the top of the water level in the tank) fountain and amazingly large flood... wow!

attempted to drain an ocean with a ton of pumps.

it might have worked too, though I would have needed more pumps. I found out the hard way that:

1. windmills work under water.

2. gears and axles work under water.

3. oceans have ALOT of water, especially if you only pick one tile of land, and the rest of the max area of ocean (I think it was something like 20 z-levels deep at the end).

4. it IS possible to flood the world in this version, with a little dwarven ingenuity

5. it's not much fun to play a fort with 7 dwarves stuck in an area with no rocks or ore to dig because the rest of the world is covered with ocean water being pumped out and there is a saltwater aquifer below you that never freezes.

in case your wondering, I forgot to hook the lever up to stop it, and by the time I realized the gears were underwater. oops.

I just realized that a geyser trap would be really cool. Could you make a video of this?

I wanna make trap that when goblins arrive, you pump the water so much, that its like from firemans, and it pierces or extremely hurts em (bonus if slamming into the wall), but that shouldnt be possible in this ver.

It was winter and there was some water that I wanted to drain so I ordered my miner to dig a channel to drain it on then dig out the ice that seperated the water from the channels, next thing I know.

Ast onullogem, Miner has been encased in ice.

I don't really follow...what did it look like? The whole design that is?

I would guess it was something like this (side view):

code:

|~~~~~~| ~~~~
|      |~ ~  ~
|      |  ~
|      |  ~
--  ------ -------------
 ||_____|~|
 |~~~~~~~~|
 |_______~|

based on the description.

That gave me an idea:

code:

= : grate
^ : pressure plate
g : goblin learning to fly

         g
|~~~~~~| ~~~~
|      |~ ~  ~
|      |  ~
|      |  ~

I thereby propose a contest for shooting goblins (or nobles) to the greatest height possible.

Make it so

A.K.A A pit dug around the area so when the goblin presses it, even if he escapes the water will fill the area.

So I made a geyser and flooded the world. Water pressure = much faster flood.

That sounds awesome! I might have to do something like that with my current fort (which I'm getting bored of).

Hehehehe... I just had a thought. I've read of people very carefully finding a way around (under?) aquifers... what if you hooked an aquifer up to a geyser trap?

Ahahahahha! Even better -- a magma geyser!

water only applies pressure to equilize the level... meaning the top of the 'storage' water has to be higher then the exit. you could pump it out of the aquifer, but there would be no real advantage over a river or ocean or lake.

magma dosen't use the same flow code as water, so it does not apply pressure the same and you won't get a geyser. Plus magma is non-renewing so your magma geyser would only be 1 shot if it did work.

Is it possible to make stuff float on water?

Also, can falling/rising water power stuff?

Do you think you could like, have a chute of water activate a pressure pad, so that when the thing was at the top a bridge would snap shut below? Dwarven elevator! If only pressure pads worked on dwarves...
