  Welcome all to the unofficial NetHack discussion topic.


Has anyone here ever played NetHack or a NetHack variant before? What did you think? Do you still play it? How far have you gotten, have you ascended?

I play a variant called SLASH'EM, and my best character ever was a level 11 human monk.

Best I ever did was LvL 1 anything, but I only found it about a week ago. So far I have been killed by pissing off god, blasted by a wizard for kicking down his door, killed by several unimportant vermin, blown up by a shopkeeper for being invisible (bigot) and turned into a worm. This is difficult.

Good deaths in NetHack are just as good as victories.

I zapped a wand of polymorph at myself, and turned into an electric eel. Unfortunately, there was no water. I went down to one HP and transformed back. Then got killed by a newt.

Well, I've gotten over 20,000 points, which isn't much. I'm more of a Crawl guy, but I love NetHack's silliness. My best character was a ranger, but I usually play Tourists and Archaeologists.

I never play Valkyries. Ever. Not once.

You have to admire their coding.
EVERY bit of code that does damage must run it through the generic damage function, with a cause of death.
That way, everything has a unique text, and they had a sense of humor when making that kind of stuff.

My pets always get eaten by traps :P

Also, my most common death is getting killed by swarms of bees. And swarms of ants. And swarms of snakes. And a pony. Well, the snakes are my fault, but everything else...

Hmm... I can't think of my best character, probably an archeologist. I've been killed plenty of horrible ways. I should try the game out again, got a bit bored of it.
