actually the world outside does exist in a very basic sense that the towns of each people exist but nothing else so they items and shit materialize but they are in the elfs home biome then yours so if the elfs home is hazardous then  they can die.

Oh, the elves on my fort do that.

Granted, they don't trade them, but they bring a few animal corpses and a bunch of elf corpses to the depot. I wonder if that's connected to how the depot mysteriously seals and floods every spring, before miraculously draining again and leaving their stuff.

Mind, after their diplomat strangely fell into the magma pipe, they skipped the trading and just sent me a pissed-off horse and a bunch of elf corpses and weapons.

Its the elf version of leaving a horse head in your bed.

I will reiterate what was said about traders travelling through harsh biomes harming animals, its in the wiki somewhere I belive.

To put it in perspective I've had Humans, Elves and Dwarves bring me dead animals, so its not really anything to do with race.

You are all missing the obvious solution.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And the wiki isn't always right.  Its a wiki.

It could be possible that the animals still check what the temperature should be when they enter the map, temperature on or not.  I think it does it anyway to try to determine suitable trader and immigrant clothing even with weather off.

EDIT: I mean, the temperature is stored with the map tile at worldgen anyway.  It's not like the game wouldn't be able to determine if an animal would die or not just by looking at that.

Obviously I'm not suggesting that the Wiki has a definitive answer, I'm just saying that perhaps someone found the solution previously and wrote down the information hence creating the wiki article.  ;)

Ah, my bad then.  It just sounded to me like you were saying the wiki article (traders travel on the world map injuring animals) trumps 'Word of God'(outside world largely does not exist in fortress mode yet).  I was a bit annoyed at the time and may not have been thinking straight.

I assume the OP meant that he had temperature and weather off.  If that's correct something is going on here.  But everything would just be speculation at this point.  Heck animals showing up with temperature wounds with temperature off could very well be classed as a bug for all we know.

No worries  ;)

In terms of caged animals arriving injured isn't it often the case that a caged creature can't be hurt? I mean if you cage trap a heavily bleeding goblin is the goblin kept invunerable as it does not bleed to to death while in the cage. Of course I may very well be wrong there, but if it is the case then caged animals being injured raises questions about how they were hurt as well as where.
