we could theoretically test the idea out on BYOND.

it would be laggy and annoying, but its a start.

im learning C++ BTW.

one last thing, we could probably get this to work in Multiplayer, having each person as their own character, customised blah blah blah.

it could either work as each person is separate and may meet up during a mission, or as actual party-based adventuring. i demand barricade building and space-walking and being able to destroy walls (with immense effort, meaning its not useful unless you HAVE to do it).

rickvoid: Is that scarsam I detect?

What is scarsam?

 ;D

No, I actually like this idea. And I think text based would be fun, I haven't played a good sci-fi text based game... ever, really. Plus, there are a number programs out there that can be used to build the adventure pretty easily, though I don't know if it can be randomized like we're thinking. Would be neat though.

If it can't be (and more and more I'm thinking it probably can't), I'd vote for a top-down, 2-D, keyboard controlled interface. Not a platformer like Spelunky, more of an adventure game ala-Zelda. Having certain pieces of equipment (like weapons, or advanced tools) carry over between ships would be awesome.

Ooh, neat idea. Give our little buddy a limited inventory (one main weapon, one sidearm, and a couple of slots for tools, diagnostic equipment, and spare parts, plus a little free backpack space) then he has to pick from the supplies on his ship before he transfers over to the next level/space-hulk. Anything he leaves the ship with at the end of the mission gets stored on his ship and can be taken with him on the next mission.

If we really wanted to, we could RPG-it up and give him levels, XP rewards, and percentage based skill-checks (like various weapon skills, computer use, medical, and other skills).

... I think I just had a nerd-gasm.  :-[

id rather not have weapons, but a customisation system, is this goes on-line, as i think it will, and be awesome on, having customisable things is useful, say every-so-often, we code another small item in that can be attatched to something, maybye there is only one of each item, forcing a trading system, say we have a trading house, in-game economy right there,

able to make-build-pilot ships, awesome potential.

this game would have a lot of potential, we just need to know what language it would be in.

i also vote for graphicalness, if we do it well, it would look amazing.

ill write up a background and list of my ideas for you all, itll be better formatted and easier to understand than this

I wasn't thinking about weapons like bazookas or mini-guns, but more along the lines of laser-weapons, knives and such. How else are we supposed to deal with the occasional alien threat?

So here are some additional things I thought of. The low level starting character only has very basic equipment; no weapons, a basic tool-set (think of your standard Swiss Army Knife or Multi-Tool), and small ship with very limited storage space. At lower levels, he gets sent to find lost shuttles (in which case you actually fly your ship around a nebula or something), repair small damaged ships, etc. These typically have one problem, and the chance of alien encounters is low. At higher levels, he gets assigned a bigger ship with more storage, and gets sent to deal with bigger problems, like empty (huge) space stations, deserted moon bases (Original Doom references here please), and similar tasks. There should be multiple problems/mysteries to solve, and alien encounters more common.

As for the Aliens, there should be a large range of alien types. I'd love to see everything from the aforementioned sentient gas to Predator type run-and-guns to that Alien from the Aliens movie that moves around in the airshafts, occassionally dropping down and surprise-sexing you. Facehuggers would be fun. The little bastard latches itself onto you and the screen goes blank. When it clears, you are somewhere else on the ship. You have a limited amount of time to use a medical device in the med-bay to kill the chestburster before you die.

I do like the idea of customizing your own ship, and space-walking excursions are a must. How else am I supposed to repair the coms-antennae?

Another idea: Special, non random levels, drawn from other games/books/TV shows. I think it would be highly entertaining if our little space-buddy stumbled across, say, the space ship from the second Trilby game- complete with Jon Defoe chasing you around.  ;D

*Edited 'cause I can't type for shit.  :'(

sorry, typo, i meant to say "levels" rather than weapons.

im doing this a lot recently.

additionally, i do not mean a SS13 type game, i meant as you said, but having a multiplayer element may be a nice addition.

So, who wants to take up the challenge of this project? Servant corps is obviously the manager.

Oops. Didn't mean to post without saying anything.

Anyway, any particular reasoning against levels? I can understand not wanting skills, since it would be annoying if we could solve a mission because our science or repair is too low, but levels would allow us to determine what type of mission gets generated by the game, so we have some idea of what we're doing before we get dropped on a massive space station.

i mean levels as in experience and the like, or at least, the common usage.

LEVELS as in game levels are fine.

Okay, I guess farming aliens for experience doesn't make much sense if we're trying to make a spooky kind of game.

How about a Prestige system? Every completed mission gives us a little prestige, and at certain amounts we gain higher ranks within whatever company/government/space force employs us. At higher ranks, we get access to more difficult missions, and have access to restricted equipment and ship customization pieces. Our prestige amount could double as capital to "purchase" (requisition) equipment. We would have two prestige variables then: Total Acquired, which would be used for ranks, and Current, which would be our Total Acquired amount minus the amount spent on requisitions. Returning equipment undamaged/relatively unscathed would give us back some of our used prestige.

Bringing back certain items (contraband cargo, Xeno-samples, porn flicks) could give us bonus prestige at the end of a mission.

That sound better?

something like promotions within a company would be an acceptable outcome. (no bad ideas!)

i just dislike "levels" as such, im going to spend some time writing up all my ideas, anyone who is interested, do the same, we can merge them and do a lot of things here.

we must make a LOT of content, if i figure out the language and that, ill be abke to do quite a few quite often.

this idea is glorious, keep talking.

Okay, keeping talking.

As for programs that could be used to make this, I immediately though of Adventure Game Studio, and RPG Maker. But, for various reasons, I don't think either of those would work too well.

About our little-buddy, the Repair-man. How are we going to handle his data? Does he get deleted on death, and we start over? Do we have a cloning chamber on our ship, and we get charged prestige everytime we die? (In increasing amounts, the more we die? Perhaps that amount could reset everytime we gain a new rank?) Some mixture of the two? (Permadeath until we can afford (prestige and power-wise) to have a cloning vat on our ship?)

Mission Types:
Lost Shuttle: A small shuttle-craft has dissapeared in (insert here). You must comb the area with your ship to find it. Upon finding it, you must board and ascertain why it was lost. (Perhaps the crew went berserk and killed each-other. Perhaps the engines died, and must be repaired. Perhaps etc.) Solve the issue, move to next mission.
Abandoned Mining Facility (???)
Distress Call (???)

Special Missions:
7 Days a Skeptic: I listed this above, but I wanted to reproduce it here.
The Thing: John Carpenters horror flick, but we're now part of it. Mission ends when we figure out which one of the poor bastards we run into is the Thing, and kill it. Bonus points awarded for every other person that survives.
Doom: The first level from the first Doom game. Needs a secret room with Nazis, for a better ID Software reference.  ;D
Space-Hulk/WH 40K: On large drifting abandoned ship encounters, there should be a chance to run into a Space Marine company... and maybe a few gene-stealers...  ;D ;D

It's always been my understanding that you get the behaviour you reward...  You can do experience and levels (Character levels or just a pointbuy) without rewarding killing monsters.  Maybe by fixing things?

Um...I was thinking there would only be one level, where Repairman goes in, fixes the problem, finds out what happens, and leave. Once he finishes that mission, he gets a "YOU WIN!" sign and gets to play again entirely...

I didn't think of the idea that there could be more than one level...hm. I really hope there is a good engine out there you could use...

That's what happens when you submit an idea to a community like this.

I wish I knew how to make games like this. I have this image in my head, of what this would look like, sort of like how the old Shining Force, or maybe the top-down Final Fantasy games looked, but futuristic.

It's mildly frustrating. I really hope this goes somewhere.
