Maybe it's not plugged in right? Or maybe it is interference. I never heard of weird sounds coming from desktops. I know that power sources hum at a certain frequency, but never seen a monitor do it, and certainly haven't heard the problem coming from software. Try switching it with another monitor and see if it changes?

Do you have more than one set of audio jacks on your computer? Some computers have a set both on the front and back. The set in front tends to pick up a lot of interference, since it's usually connected internally using thin, unshielded extension cables that have to go past small electric motors such as the CPU fan and hard disk. The set in back is directly connected to the sound card/chip and better shielded.

RF interference inside the case. Happens a lot on builds with average parts. Cabling can help if it's not already bunched/routed, as can getting an external sound device like a USB sound dongle.

The intereference might only be coming from certain inputs/outputs.

Try this:

Open Volume Control. Go to Options, make sure "Advanced" is checked, and go to "Properties", tick "Playback" and check EVERY option. Now, go back to the volume control and all of them should be displayed. Try muting various ones. Then get back into the Properties window and do the same, except for "Recording" instead of "Playback".

Basically, different inputs/outputs might be picking up different interference, particularly with onboard sound, so try muting some of them to see if that helps.

I keep getting this irritating buzzing sound through my headphones and the speakers of my screen. From this, I've managed to deduce that the sound is coming from the desktop itself, rather than any interference on the way. The pitch of the sound varies depending on what is being displayed. For instance, if I scroll up and down, the pitch changes. Does anyone know what the problem is and how it can be fixed?

This isn't an uncommon problem. I've worked on plently of computer which this happens. I don't know how to fix it though, but just know it's not an uncommon thing.

In fact my computer at work is doing it now! Weee!

I haven't fixed the problem, but I think I've managed to find a way to avoid it. It seems to be related to having programs open. So, I'll have to deal with it sometimes but not all the time. Thanks for helping though guys.

I'm tempted to blame whatever O/S you're using :P

Is it related to having specific programs open, or a lot of programs, or what?

Actually, it's an entirely new computer. Here are the specifications,

Intel Q8400 2.66GHz
4GB RAM
GeForce GTS250 2GB
Windows 7 64bit
Asus P5KPL motherboard-this does the sound as well.
I don't know what the network card or PSU is.

It seems to be a constant thing, the buzz is always there, it's really low if I have a browser open. If I'm playing a game, it's particularly obvious in the black screens between intro video when it's starting, like a high pitched whine. When I made this thread, it was pretty loud, that turned out to be due to the Battleships Forever ship builder although that could just be a problem with the program itself.
are you sure you have the right slot?

Maybe it's correlated to hard drive activity or something stupid like that.

Did you try doing what I suggested?
