Not even cheese?

I'd say that deconstructing everything and building everything from scratch is viable option. (Regarding levers) Or it would be if theres not enough dorfpower.

Here's my plan.

Start game.
Use eldritch magicks to make the immigrants practically immortal.
???
Remove eldtrich magicks.
Profit!

And take out the FUN?
I dissaprove of your plan. Still, do whatever you see fine.

I think that sentence describes all of Failcannon.

I'd recommend:
-Start game.
-Get a handful of sane, healthy dorfs to a saferoom with food, booze, and perhaps some weapons and tools.
-Use the remaining dorfs to see what everything does.
-Leave the problem of how to turn three dorfs in a saferoom back into a thriving (or at least, surviving) fort to the next player on the list.
--Alternatively: Watch as three dorfs in saferoom get surprised by a sudden torrent of water/a horde of pissed-off goblin prisoners/a flood of magma/whatever.
-Report findings.
-???
-Profit

This is where it fails.

Really, all I'm waiting for now is to find out how to write this from the POV of somebody who died before even setting a foot into the fort.

You could write it from the point of view of a kobold thief who's scouting out the fortress. Maybe he's a psychic kobold who then decides to make the dorfs do stuff for him.

Or maybe your ghost was called to service to help the fortress, in its war against the tearing of the universe.

"So when is the drawbridge about to get opened?"
"I don't know sir.", the messenger replies. Apparently he also got banished here, for a frivolous reason no doubt. The queen probably also has a thing against people from down-under.
"I thought there were still survivors here?"
"No doubt sir. Most people were killed, but those that are left are as durable as adamantine."
"Just like us then." The two of us are the last survivors of our migration group. The others have been done in by a combination of zombie trolls, skeletal buzzards and a freak woodcutting accident. "You hear that noise?"
"Yes sir."
"Now doubt for the stuff lying around here."
That was true. The entire area, as far as I can see, was covered in all kinds of junk. Barrels, cages, arms, bolts, legs and arms, several of which still were wearim clothes.
"Well look it on the bright side, sir. We have food lying around, there's booze, and the weather has cleared up too!"
As if by divine irony, gallons and gallons of water poured on my head. While Aussie almost got swept away, I was too busy planting my hand into my face for such nonsense. A few seconds later, it stopped again. "That was the flood gate wasn't it?"
"Yes sir."
Sigh. "Do these buffoons not know which lever to pull or are they being pretentious arseholes to us?"
"No idea sir. Maybe-"
Boohoohooohooooo~
"Please tell me it's not what I think it is."
"It's not what you think it is, sir"
"So it's not a zombie goast that is making fun of us?"
"Not quite sir."
"Have they still not completed the sacred rites of burial?"
"Seems like not, sir."
"Aussie?"
"Sir?"
"This will be a looong spring I'm afraid."

Not a lot happened really. Mostly (dis)abling jobs and removing designations. And apparently the only dwarf willing to pull any levers was Dariush... who at the moment still was imprisoned. And none of the levers actually lowered the drawbridge, which is why I told them to connect one of them to it. They still haven't, unsurprisingly, since Catalyst apparently has no job right now. The good news is that they have actually begun to place new memorials, so that should calm the buggering undead for now.

What's my dwarf doing?

Journal of Mormota II

We are getting close. It will be over soon. I know it will be. It has to be. Urist is dying. We must get there in time. We must save him. I can't care about the others, not any more. He has to live. I promised him.

An entry sometime later.

I can't believe it happened. We were so close! I heard the waves in my dreams, we must be so close! I hope he's satisfied with the speech I gave him. It's the best I could do. I'm now alone. Alone in my task to save three others, and myself. Three others, among them the caravan master. I swear I'll kill him before we get there! He must be punished for this!
