Panopticon's journal

Midwinter,

well I have been told I am in charge now, this is a surprise as I have basically been in my office for the past year or so and have no idea what it going on. I can't even figure out where the kitchen in this place is.

Notes left for me indicate that I should be working on getting a proper metal industry set up, my predecessor made a start on that but flux appears to be an issue, the solution to that is the same as most things for Dwarfs: Dig deeper, the lore says there is usually marble somewhere in the depths, I have instructed the miners to go find it.

One thing I do know right off is that we need more booze, supplies are pretty low at the moment, I will try to remedy that once I find the kitchens, or at least some people I can yell at until they find or build the kitchens for me.

I also need a suite of offices as befits my new station, complete with tomb.

The mayor appears to want some rooms of his own as well, I'll get to it if I have time, meanwhile he tells me not to trade earrings.

Finally there is defense, our main entrance is protected only by a pair of doors, this does not seem sturdy enough to me so I have ordered a drawbridge built in front of the Trade Depot, since we have vast amounts of gold it shall be made of that.

Additionally water supplies worry me, currently everyone has to go way out to the river to fish or get water for the wounded or whatever, I believe that can be solved by diverting some of the river into the fort and have given the orders, this will keep people safe as well as allow the use of wells and maybe even a waterfall.

Sheesh, who left the refuse pile outside? Doesn't anyone know that doing that only encourages necromancy? We don't want to be overrun by zombie body parts. I took down one of the farms and replaced it with an indoor refuse pile.

A farmer ran across a kobald thief and was stabbed once in each thigh, harsh.

ARMOK DAMNED THIEVES EVERYWHERE.

A kidnapper got a kid, maybe now they will go away and let us get some work done.

Looks like it, managed to make some decent progress on the water supply after the thieves stopped, posting the Torments of Profanity outside helped a bit too, at this rate the water project should be ready by the end of Spring, which has just arrived.

an indoor refuse pile? youll get miasma EVERYWHERE. at least take off the roof so that you wont get miasma. also i wouldnt take down any of the farms cos we're kinda screwed without them. or bare minimum build a goddamned door to stop miasma creeping into the fort... Also the only necromancer tower within range of our fort invaded in the first summer and was killed so theres no fear of the undead :)
Also there's no flux (At least I don't think so, so you'll need to gring some bones into flux at the boneyard, which you'll have to create)
[EDIT] Let's play "count how many times I said 'also' in that paragraph" ;)

Grinding bones to flux is a pretty dumb idea, unless Meph fixed it. If he didnt, it will take a entire stack of bones and make ONE flux out of it. So we would get 1 Flux material out of every thing we kill. better to dig deep and wait for marble. Although bituminous coal should indicate flux stone of some description.

Oops :P Maybe scrap that idea. Isn't there also a reaction to grind a boulder into flux or something? Stones aren't in stacks so that should be okay ;D

Warlocks all can raise the dead, this includes thieves, doors work fine to stop miasma, additionally necromancer towers have more than one necromancer in residence usually, have you seen the amount of farms we have? we can easily survive without one.

If there is no flux I can at least prospect for stuff like Mithril or whatever, and grind bones if I have too.

Well at channel through the roof and then build a floor over it. This stops the miasma. Otherwise the dwarfs who have to haul the refuse get bad thoughts. :)

You could also try and take some of the useless Migrants that will come, make them to strand extractors and let them pray on a shrine of armok for hard metals. Its not mithril or steel all the time, but quite often. I think ive left some totems when i escaped retired to be the leader of the marksdwarfs.

I'm not making a hole to the outside, and especially not a hole that leads to the refuse pile. Enemies do come with flying mounts, and necromancers only need to be able to see the body to raise it. Our little alcoholics will just have to make do with the vast amount of furniture, crafts, nice dining room, and (soon) wells to make up for once in a while smelling miasma.

Thats why you build a floor over the hole once you've opened the roof. Once an area has been exposed to the outside and has been covered over it becomes an "indoor" area and counts as an outside zone.
Also firhawk, I set up some shrines, but I took them down during my turn because I didn't have the mandwarfpower to be able to use them....

Spring

The drawbridge is built, and awaits a lever to connect to it.

Drow ambush, got the doors locked but there is a kid and a fisherdwarf still outside. The child was promptly grabbed by a Minotauros snatcher.

With the Drow outside, we can't finish the water supply in the manner I intended, working on digging out offices for now and if they haven't left by summer I'll get an alternate plan going.

Our wounded aren't getting water, I ordered a shrine constructed, perhaps Armok will provide.

Migrants, well good luck getting in guys

The Drow found them, it was fast at least, Leprechauns immediately stole their stuff.

The Drow finally took off! Not before the wounded died of thirst of course, but whatever, open the doors!

And just in time for Summer to hit, no Elves for us to trade with this year I guess.

Elves have died off in the world ;) And remember, if you set the marksdwarfes to "inactive", they man the walls. But you should probably finish the fortifications, in case of archers.
