Flame FB
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:48:37 pm »

I got invaded by a towering blob made of flame and my military won't attack it. If I tell them to station nearby they just stand around and burn to death.

I figured normal weapons wouldn't harm something made of flame and decided to flood my cave but the water just turns into steam. Are spikes the only way to kill it?

No, no. Beasts of flame can be attacked like any other creature and no creature in DF is intangible or immune to weapons. (Not anymore, at least)

Well, creatures made of metal or rock need tougher materials to damage them, but that's not weapon immunity.

Just attack it. It'll die in one hit. Same thing for FB's/titans/demons made of grime, ash, salt, water, fire, snow, and other liquid/powder/gaseous materials.

These materials have no material toughness values and therefore these creatures die due to kittens scratching them. (Not even hyperbole)

Marksdwarves are best for that. Preferably a lot.

And you'll never kill a creature made of flame by dunking it in water, at least in the current dwarf fortress. I've seen (modded) creatures made of ice and very cold get encased in ice while in water, though.

But when I told my military to kill it, they pathed away I don't know where they were going. When I told them to station in sight of it they just stood there and no fighting took place. I had them return to base after one guy burned to death from the flames

This is .24 and I've killed a lot of things so far so it's definitely not the not attacking bug.

I've heard dorfs don't like heat when it comes from creatures, and thus are unwilling to approach it, so a remote attack should work.
Expansion on Naryar's single hit: I've heard a single hit will sever/destroy whatever it hits, in which case you could take off an arm with the first hit, a leg with the second, and so on. Since a blob doesn't have any parts, it should be a single hit win in this case.

A question about tougher materials:
How do you figure out what is required to harm a tough material FB? I had an FB made out of morion rampaging and slaughtering in one of the caves. Just when I was about to find out if a glass menacing spike trap would be able to hurt it, a cave dragon finally killed it off (and I've captured the cave dragon, YAY!), so I still don't know. Would bronze gradually whittle away at steel, or would it be completely ineffective, for instance?

Yes, I think that had something to do with it. I had to station them in a dry, fireless piece of floor and they managed to kill it with one strike. The first time I sent them, the cavern was full of fungus so everything around the FB was aflame. Now it's all ashes

There should be wiki stuff about metal vs metal or metal vs stone. I think the best way to kill hard things is with spear because they pierce them.

Piercing is good for damaging internal organs. If your opponent is hard and inorganic don't expect to do any damage whatsoever. Use axes or possibly war hammers.
