So I sent out my legendary squad to go raid some necromancer tower somewhere about 7 days' travel away. About a month later, I get a notification that my militia commander has returned (not that the squad has returned). The mission report doesn't say anything even happened to them (they just went in undetected, stole some books, left) but the tracker that shows where they walked had them stop on the journey back about 1 day in.

After waiting a few months, some of the militia-dwarves have come back in migrant waves. Their armor and weapons which they were attached to were gone and they instead just had clothes and 2 pieces of bone jewelry (which the game probably spawned in for them, since they got a happy thought about putting on an item as soon as they arrived).

I'm probably going to handle this by just waiting and training up a new squad in the meantime, but can anyone explain to me why this happens? I'm pretty new to the game (started only after steam version came out) and I'm still learning. Is this a bug? A feature? If it's a feature, what's going on?

Sounds like a bug that needs to be reported. Maybe you could upload the save to https://dffd.bay12games.com/ , and any older save from before the squad left/during their mission like an autosave, and post it in the discord bug discussion board

With any luck Putnam will be able to figure out how to prevent it happening again.

Jumping to conclusions: those squad members who stole the books in the raid, they studied the books, remained in the tower, and applied to join the necromancers. Now they are coming back poorly disguised as migrants, with the goal of farming necrobacon or introducing other fun.
