Is this normal?
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:27:08 am »

So I am building a an above ground fort. Is it normal to attract no migrants as long as I have only 8 bedrooms for my 13 dwarves?

Did you already get two migrant wave and no more? Does your civ have any important leader, and have you had caravans?

It's possible your civ's dead if there're no important leaders and no caravans.

Your value is too low.
Get those walls engraved, you're gonna be making your fort wealthy!

Unless there're obsidian casting or strip-mining involved, there'll be constructed walls, not engravable.

If you want good wealth maker, churn out ropes made from rope reed, dye it if you want for some more boost  :D

You've got to raise your wealth if you want dwarves to go live there. The more wealth, the more likeliness of more dwarves. More dwarves also mean more potential wealth. That's how immigration gets so out-of-control.

Keep the place a dump and you (likely) won't attract many - or any - migrants. A lot of dwarf deaths in your fortress also pushes away potential immigrants.

At what year and population? For me, a 4-ish year old fort has easily made 1 million+ with 100+ population. By that point, I don't get surprised if I get "no migrants were attracted this season".

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Actually, I got migrants now. Apparently, this release NEEDS your dwarves to have bedrooms.

I do above ground forts all the time, beds are never an issue.  Wealth is.  Normally you're digging underground, and that stone counts towards your created wealth.  Sure, they're like 1-2 value per stone, but you dig out a lot of it, and then smooth and usually engrave it, and it piles up fast.  Above ground, you don't have this forced wealth.  However, I usually embark with ore, so I quickly make a few suits of armor, and that drives my value up sharply.  Otherwise, any textile industry is a great source of wealth to encourage migrants/sieges.

I forts all the time, and more often than not migrants pops up when there're not remotely enough bed for all them buggers. It's more likely than not simple wealth issue since digging out makes a lot of wealth just in stones. Producing stuffs like rope and farming heavily will help with wealth generation.
