Name, Age: Raioyris, 19
Clade: Baseline
Appearance: Longish black hair with bangs. Pale skinny build. Male. Bright silver eyes. He wears tight black pants a studded belt and a dark gray t-shirt.
Bio: Raioyris grew up homeless but not without care. Society managed to provide school and food for Raioyris; despite this Raioyris early life was full of bitterness. He hated Panthropes. He hated them so much. He never really understood how such a hatred developed in himself but it never seemed to matter.
Raioyris needed to prove to himself that the flesh of a Panthrope was no more capable than the flesh of a regular human despite their boasts. He began an insane training regiment and in time his flesh maximized and he became something of a living weapon. However; the effects of his training had twisted his logic. He became unruly and arrogant. He would try to stir up trouble with Panthropes.
One night he got his wish. A fight broke out. At first the match was something of a high school fight. Singular punches; each fighter gauging each other. Eventually Raioyris lost it. He tackled his foe and began a desperate wrestling match. Raioyris overpowered his foe easily under the blackness of night. It was too easy; the Panthropes boasts echoed in his brain, now they seemed rather comical. He gouged his eyes, finally after minutes of listening to weepy muted cries Raioyris tore his throat.
Raioyris escaped the scene. The next few days were surreal, Raioyris didn't think much about what he did. He just entertained himself quietly, listening to the static of life. He often felt lightheaded and sick. During the next few years he was far more passive and timid than he ever had been. He focused time on school and began to read. He read of wars and killing, science and reason. During this time Raioyris raised a crow named Hermia. Staring into her black feathers takes him back to that night. He felt like he left some part of himself back there.
If only he knew what it was. Due to the talents Raioyris accumulated during the years following his murder Raioyris found himself a soldier.

Name: Jeremy Nix
Age: 21
Clade: Baseline
Appearance: Short, stocky, slicked back dark hair. Rich brown skin, stolid black eyes.
Bio: Jeremy, or Jem for short, always wanted to find meaning in his life. Having lived what he deemed an average, not-rich-not-poor existence, he longed to do or be a part of something that he could devote the rest of his life to. The clergy would have been one option, if it weren't for his own lack of faith. Academia? Jem was never that bookish, and he longed for something which would allow him to prove his worth as a man. The military? That'd do. The war was just a neat coincidence.

Name: Gwydion Branwen
Age: 29
Race: Baseline (Human)
Appearance: Black hair, cropped short military-style so it doesn't spring out in 'embarrassing' curls. Brown eyes. Brown cargo pants, slightly aged and worn so that the bottoms of the legs appear as a ring of strings. Gray T-shirt with the name of who personally dyed it in bright red -- Hihm Jojo, popular rock climber and daredevil sponsoring a brand of sweet and sour candy known as Jojubes.
Bio: Originally a simple day-to-day factory worker helping to make precision instruments for all kinds of labwork. Was cherry-picked for the draft due to a prior background in explosives ordnance engineering & demolitions for urban renewal; his family's typical line of work, though he quit to put his steady hands to use on something rather less exciting.

He may suffer penalties from working with 'incompetents' or even with the knowledge that they might be doing a job he believes himself far more qualified for to ensure safety and completion.
>Explosives expertise: Able to perform the dangerous and precise task of properly handling and preparing explosive materials.
>Electronic device expertise: Knows the ins and outs of what makes electronic devices and appliances tick. Could fix a broken toaster, wire up a simple door alarm, or salvage electronics for useful parts.
>Precision sabotage: Experience with small objects, combined with a background in explosives, allows Gwydion the possibility of unobtrusively placing surveillance bugs and tinkering with precise instruments, or even creating miniature explosive charges small enough to destroy an important cable or circuit board without causing any unnecessary alarm.

Appearance: A squat, broad built Panthrope with many tattoos and a nose ring. No hair. Spindly mustache. Eyeglasses.
Bio: Jacob was a hunter. And a damn good one, too. His family never was without food for the winter, even though they lived secluded in the mountains. Name, Age: Jane Allura
Clade: Panthrope
Appearance:Short compared to the average Panthrope, Jane is generally picked on as a runt among Panthropes, for multiple reasons. One such being her height, and another being her purple eyes, which are extremely unnatural, therefore, means for discrimination. She is seen by humans as somewhat of a beauty, however, as she is what society has labelled as beautiful, with well-endowed assets, and a pleasant figure, with large eyes and long green (dyed) hair, which she generally keeps tied up in a ponytail. She is usually wearing cheap clothing, nothing too spectacular.
Bio: Jane grew up in a fairly poor situation, being forced to work for her own schooling. Despite this, she excelled in schooling, enough to be accepted in the Watt-Physferus Academy. She still faces discrimination for how she looks, and how poor she was as a child. Her family was a mess from her birth, her father leaving, and her mother being an alcoholic, Jane had to work for both herself and her mother, before she could finally afford for her mother to go into a rehabilitation centre. She can generally seen reading, if not helping others out, and she has become quite skilled at scrounging for supplies over the years.

City of Irrowskurn, 2032 Orbital Time, Year 79
You are all hurried into the barracks with nary an explanation as to what to do. These will be your quarters when the sun rises and everyone goes to bed. The building is shielded against climate and has self-darkening windows which tint at dawn and fade at sunset. It's a half-cylindrical room no larger than a small home, but such is the price to pay for hastily assembling an ad-hoc training camp.
It seems your schedule begins in an hour. Two hours of class a day and fourteen hours of driving a tank around. It seems like a dream come true for some of you, if your lives weren't on the line...
The demographics of the barracks are: 18 men ages 20-50 (older men aren't except from the draft, but there are very few people older than 50) and 12 women, mostly college students (older women are required to have children to increase the population and aren't draftable). Roughtly a third are first or second-generation panthropes: tall, clear voices, no masks, munching on organic fishsticks or jerky or whatnot. The rest are baseline humans, some of whom wear surgical masks to keep out the alien pollen that sometimes blows in from the fields this time of year.
The girls are mostly gathered in one large group. The men, on the other hand, split between college students and adults, numbering 8 and 5 respectively ((excluding the players)). It seems everyone brought bags, and some put their bags next to bunk beds to claim a spot. One of the college-aged guys is vehemently holding onto his claim, literally tossing bags across the room and punching people out so as to be alone.

Recall where I left Hermia, my pet crow.
You take full notice that you'd forgotten something. Something very important.
Outside the barracks, there is a staircase on a scaffold leading to the room, where the solar panels and electrical boxes are installed. This building may have been constructed recently.
You step up onto the roof and stand in the wind, gusts blowing past (unblocked by city structures). The sky is dark tonight, almost pitch-black to your normal, unmodified eyes. In actuality, the stars are hidden by the glare of the city lights, but since both they and the glare are so dim they form the darkest part of your visual range.
You stand there, motionless. You know that your bird will answer your call no matter where and how. You take in the night with all your senses, and the night overtakes you. Soon, but not too soon, you hear the quiet flutter of wings circling around you. A pair of talons, familiar to your sin, land themselves at your shoulder.
[6] (You took a little long to find Hermia, so you couldn't finish your other action)
Walk over to the troublesome guy being a dick to everyone else.
You tell him: "Hey, jerkoff, cool it. What's the matter with you?"
His response is to throw a punch at you, (d6: 1) missing wildly and and throwing him off-balance. You can knock him down easily now (difficulty: [d4: 2]).
Choose a reflexive response to attacks: Offensive, Defensive, or Evasive
Well, if they're in such a hurry, that definitely means they need us to learn fast. Alright. Here's hoping they at least give us trunks or something to store our stuff.
First, I find a decent bunk, no real preference, to lay my bags out on. If there's a trunk, everything except any primers or brochures or whatever that's relevant to this military organization goes in. (Though I doubt they'd have had time to even give us our uniforms yet, let alone primers.)
Mostly, I want to stick by this bunk and kindly invite someone nearby to join me; they can take the top bunk if they like. It's kinda important to make friends at this juncture.
[d6: 3] You get a top bunk, with the bottom already taken by a student whose bags fell over and spilled assignments all over the ground. You notice marks on some of them: 98, 97, 99. A model student.
There are no lockers, but there's a big space under the lower bunk, enough to store most suitcases and backpacks. You notice a set of wheeled dividers set down next to the bed for privacy. That's about it.
Find an unclaimed bed that is close to a doorway.
[d6: 2] You single out an unclaimed bed near the door, but as you make your way toward it, another student, closer still, sets his bags down on it. You look across the room and find another bed; you make your way toward that one. But that one is also claimed by the time you walk halfway, and to your dismay it seems you walked right past the last unclaimed bed in the process, which is already taken by now. What a futile endeavor. You'll just have to settle for sharing a bunk with a local tattoo artist, whom you know from an advertisement you saw on a website.
Well this is a nightmarish mess. We'll need to get this sorted out soon enough. For now, I should try to get a 'quiet' spot away from the commotion.
Find an out-of-the-way bunk and put my bag on it. If there is a person above/below me, try to strike up a conversation with them.
[d6: 6] You end up sharing a bunk with the most popular girl in school, a last-year high schooler who won't stop talking about how unfair the draft is, how her conscientious objector forms got unfairly dismissed, how she'd rather be back at school with her friends, and so on. You'd think it's strange for a teenager to be drafted. Why aren't there any others? Either way, you came here to start a conversation, [d6: 2] so you ask her about traffic pattern optimization and Braess' paradox.
[d6: 5] "Huh? Did you say... Braess paradox...?"[/color] Her expression fills with excitement.
"Wow, I've always wanted to be a civil engineer! My parents are carpenters, and nobody really buys wood cause, well, it's poisonous to humans and stuff, but you know, I've always studied a lot! But my sister never really helped out, and mom and dad were always downstairs building tables, so I never really got any help with my math..."

Name, Age: Mia Seffli, 17
Clade: Baseline
Appearance: A short female human with brown hair, tied up in a messy bun. Slender, and not too muscular. Russian.
Bio: Eldest daughter of a wealthy family, Mia had been kept as sheltered as possible in the chaos of war. (If DigitalDemon gets skipped two more times in a row, or someone's character dies, then you're in.)
City of Irrowskurn, 2000 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
I greet the person on the bunk below me, ask if they need help, and try to trade names. If they seem chatty enough, I'll try to strike up a "where-we're-from" conversation to get to know them better.
Addendum: If they're nice, I try offering them some of my deliciously sweet and sour Jojubes from my bags. Nothing better to break the ice!
Since you need to be on the floor to get to your bags anyway, you meet face-to-face.
"Oh hey! I'm Shirou. Nice to meet you. I'm kind of bummed about the draft since I spend the last week studying for finals... but... I guess it's nice that I have a say in our future."
You offer him some candy.
"For me? Oh sorry, I strictly control my diet. No junk food for me!"
He pulls out a banana from his backpack and eats it whole.
"...ah, I know how you feel. My parents were an author and journalist, so I had no help in learning math myself. The war also put a damper on my learning, but it did give me valuable experience."
Continue the conversation.
"The war...?"
You see a face of genuine curiosity.
"You mean you fought in Anexia? Wow... they must have specifically picked you for this. Have you ever been in a tank?"
Last you recall, tanks are obsolete in the age of air superiority. Anexia was the first region of New Terra to be annexed, by Irrowskurn of course. It consisted of a number of villages which popped up over the years, filled with dissidents and revolutionaries. Eventually they started housing guerillas, and in short order, Anexia was pressured into joining Irrowskurn's sphere of influence and to allow inspections.
Tanks had no role in that. They're just sitting ducks for aircraft. At least, that's what everyone thought...
OFFENSE: Punch him
[d6: 6] You put all your weight behind the blow, knocking him down onto the steel edge of the bed through a punch to the chest. He rolls over onto his side and clutches it, gasping for air. Did you hit something important...?
The guy starts coughing blood all over the white bedsheets. Someone shouts "someone help him" and you hear the doors slam. Soon enough, a pair of medics in violet-green uniforms (the camoflague is patterned in dazzling zigzags) arrive and pull the coughing boy on a stretcher.
Hey, at least you got the top bed for yourself.
Wake up from staring into space, and find a place to reserve a bed.
[1] You're dead last, so you get to pick the one bed left, where there's a girl lying on the bottom bunk, relaxing.
"Hi." she sees you set your bags down.
"Hey, you can take the bottom if you'd like. I don't have anything down there worth watching." she goes to climb the ladder.
"Ah Hermia, my first love."
Reflect upon my past until disturbed.
You remember Hermia as a little fledgeling. Crows are not native to this planet, having been reconstructed from genetic information brought aboard the colony vessel. They were made to be nocturnal, just like humans became voluntarily. Air temperatures in Irrowskurn reach 140°F routinely during the summer, too much for any Earth wildlife.
It was not expected that Earth's wildlife would find niches in New Terra's ecosystem. At some point, crows and other animals were found with symbiotic parasites living in their digestive tracts. These allows Earth's wildlife to live in the wild--and soon crows in particular were found leading nightwings (small ground predators capable of gliding from hills) to their prey, scavenging the remains.
In fact, it seems Hermia found a bit of meat of her own. She sets it down at your feet: a pincer belonging to some crustacean-like local wildlife.
Get prepared to go to our first class. Try to attract little attention.
You pass the time by reading the the instructions in your schedule:
Today's course will introduce you to recent developments in warfare. You will be expected to learn your strategic objectives and logistical basics.
Class is in the blue pavilion at 2100.
You look out the window: sure enough, the blue pavilion is there, next to a much-larger red pavilion and several violet-green tents much smaller than the last nearby.
There are a couple of trucks and armored cars parked next to an open field with targets at the end, presumably a firing range.
You get your stuff ready, including your stylus and a roll of smartpaper.

"Oh, right, thanks."
She places her bag down, and takes the bottom.
((Her age is either 18, or 20, whichever suits more.))
You slide your bags under the bed, noticing that there's not much under there. [Scrounger] You take a look, and find a liquid-cooled jacket, a flashlight, a toolkit, and some snacks. That's about it.
The barracks door slams open. It is Captain Feldman, judging from the double-barred insignia on his hat, and his nametag. He shouts across the room with a voice so penetrating you can hear it over your idle conversations and chit-chat. "Do we have a room full of soldiers here or a room of washed-up recruits? If you are not prepared then I expect you to come to class early so you can learn!"
"Geez, though he could take a punch better than that."
Claim best bunk, ask around to see where we get started with training.
You aren't sure what qualifies as 'the best' so you settle for any bed that isn't this one. You ask one guy if you can share, (d6: 4) but he shoves you away.
"Dipshit. You didn't need to take him out like that."

He passes by you and says, "Except for you, son. You're coming to the office with me."
"I'll savor it." Raioyris smiles, grabbing the pincer. If I have any food on me offer it to Hermia. "Fly true Hermia."
Go and find a bunk for some rest. Find one near a corner if possible.
You have some chocolate-coated biscuit sticks. You rip off the biscuit part and give some to Hermia, who gladly accepts it.
You then go inside. You notice Jeremy, who just got turned down, and notice an empty pair of beds right next to you.
He passes by you and tells you to stop spacing out.
Shrugging, I put the candy bag in my bags. "Respect. We're probably gonna need to watch our intake, anyway..."
It occurs to me that I have no idea how prevalent weaponry is on this planet. Is there a citizen militia group that officially trains at least bi-weekly in case an emergency comes up? Or are we looking at a room potentially full of washouts? I want to know who's got actual skills, here.
I chat him up some more while looking around pointedly to the rest of the room. "Hey, Shirou, you ever... you know, fired a gun before? Killed something? Or at least shot cans?"
If not, I offer to help him out as best I can. Teach him how to handle and care for for a gun, maybe; I learned quite a bit about that from my folks, since we sometimes had to fend off supply looters while on the job; there's plenty of crazies out there who'd love to get their hands on commercial-grade explosives.
Irrowskurn has no gun control. It's hard to limit weapons when a homemade printer can build one.
(5) "A gun? Sure. My parents made me get lessons. They always told me to watch out for myself in the world. And to eat quick, in case someone else tries to steal it.
Well," he grins to himself. "I added that last part."
He finishes cleaning up all of his papers and readying his stuff.
"Looking forward to class! We should sit together."

He shouts across the room with a voice so penetrating you can hear it over your idle conversations and chit-chat. "Do we have a room full of soldiers here or a room of washed-up recruits? If you are not prepared then I expect you to come to class early so you can learn!"
He passes by you and tells you to tie your shoelaces. Odd, you'd thought they were tied a minute ago...
"Nah, tanks weren't that popular back in the war. I did work with other land vehicles, making sure they were in proper order. It's an important job, the main reason it ended so quickly was due to the abysmal state of Anexian supply and traffic. Trucks and munitions got stuck in the city well before the troops could get it."
"But enough about me. What made you want to be a civil engineer in the first place?"
Ask the girl about her background.
"Well, my parents..." she looks flummoxed as to what to say. "My family sort of didn't look to the future. They just did their things. I felt like a hypocrite using all the marvels of modern technology without contributing to it myself."
The barracks door slams open. It is Captain Feldman, judging from the double-barred insignia on his hat, and his nametag. He passes by you and tells you to stop hitting on girls.
Introduce myself to the person on the bottom bunk.
"Hi. I'm Jacob."
"Hey, it's me, Rich!" he says.
Looking closer, you realize he's in a phone call, cancelling an appointment. He claps the phone shut, and then rests his face on his palms, sighing heavily.
"What the fuck... Was just starting my business and now this crap."

Shrug, follow the captain.
The captain leads you to his office, which is located in one of the violet-green camo tents set up around the camp. There's two chairs and a black folding desk that's actually just one long rectangle whose ends bend into legs.
"I need to make sure our facts are correct regarding the incident." He pulls out a shallow stack of papers. "You might not be aware of it, but you're in a different legal jurisdiction now. Military rules, in fact."
He pulls out several photos of the guy you punched and sets them out on the table, along with a piece of smartpaper currently showing the guy's age, health, and bio. "Walter Higgs, Age 26... Disabilities:," you read, "Class AT Personality Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Autism..."
"That's the victim. Had a whole list of disorders. In fact, he didn't make the draft. We've noticed a trend of siblings showing up instead of the ones that get the slip.
But that's beside the point. I need to ask you: did you know Walter before today, as an acquaintance? You'll have to give your side of the story for the tribunal to decide."
Well, pretty much everyone's going. All 30 of you share the same room in Blue Pavilion. As you walk outside you hear the faint crack of thunder, but no flash in the dark.
"Welcome to Watt-Physferus, the first of many tank academies in the country! I am Dr. Emil Watt, and this is Dr. Kara Physferus," he motions to a woman beside him, holding a stack of smartpapers. "Greetings!" she starts. The class begins.
Apparently, New Terra is under attack by aliens. At least they got that out of the way at the start. Armored warfare had never existed on this planet up until now, but due to the aliens' space-based jamming, it has become difficult for planes to navigate. It also seems the enemy has access to air superiority fighters that blow Irrowskurns' drone aircraft out of the water. Satellites are out of the question due to space superiority. To break the blockade and secure land objectives such as factories, which are needed to continue the war, Irrowskurn has ramped up production of armored ground vehicles with anti-air and anti-ground capability. The total ground forces of the enemy remain unknown. As such, the first wave of vehicles will be there to test the waters, prepared for anything that might occur.
Tanks require a constant stream of parts and fuel, as well as replacement crew for those that don't make it or can't take it anymore. As such, your first order of business on the field will be learning the basics of your tank and how to repair parts. Your next class, tomorrow, will explain the supply chain doctrine of the Irrowskurn military and immediate strategic plans.
After class is finished, Dr. Watt explains "We are going to start vehicle training next. Please gather in your assigned teams of six, chosen by Dr. Physferus' algorithm."
You assemble on the field, and find rows of armored fighting vehicles, as described. All of them are old blueprints from an old war fought on another planet. Indeed; Irrowskurn has never seen armored warfare before. All that exists are blueprint files found in old printing libraries. The actual wars they fought have been forgotten, erased from colonial libraries in an effort to start a war-free society.
Choose (vote on) two tanks from the old war. You will crew these tanks with the others.
You are allowed a light or medium tank/tank destroyer/AA gun of your choosing, from history. No reactive armor, autoloaders, or cameras yet.
Practice will be conducted through training rounds and the interior chassis has been fitted with pressure sensors to determine damage.

Officially the Gun Motor Carriage 76mm M18 Tank. Light, fast, and a great gun vs armor. This Tank destroyer would be great in the high-gravity fields of New Terra. It can still block infantry weapon fire, so the only issue would be other AFV's. Also has a mounted .50 cal MG for air defense, if the enemy uses thin enough air armor.
This Medium tank is slower then the Hellcat, and has a lower muzzle velocity. It makes up for it through actually having armor, pretty good armor at that, and a gun more suited for fighting infantry and fortified positions. Still pretty fast and has a good gun, but less suited for hit-and-run or reconnaissance work that the M18 can do. Not much it can do againts any air forces though.
I vote for A scout vehicle might come in handy. Also a M20 would allow for unexpected ambushes and flanking attacks. Though I guess it isn't really a tank....
Then
A 105mm howitzer tank might come in handy. Also an upgraded suspension will help manage the extra load of the 105mm gun. A howitzer that size must have number of useful shell types.
A light AA tank sporting a four barreled 2 cm Flak 38. Has an extremely high rate of fire for taking down planes. The Flak rounds are powerful enough to take down light tanks.
Extremely light and small, this tank is a case made tank destroyer, as such it's cannon is stuck facing forward. It has a very powerful (for it's size) 57 mm cannon capable of firing Fin Stabilized HEAT rounds.

Your team, a group of nine, consists of: Raioyris (Wunderkatze), Jeremy (NRDL), Mia (Moonlit), Gwydion (Xvareon), Jacob (Sosoku), Tray (HEN), Shirou, Trucy, and Ayn. A crow flies overhead, and comes to rest on the powerline that connects the red pavilion to the generator block at the edge of the fence.
Raioyris and Jeremy take off for the M8. [2+1] They fail to reach it in time, and it is instead crewed by a group of four girls led by Jane (formerly DigitalDemon).
Ray instead runs up the front slope of the HVSS 105mm M4 Sherman, and hops inside. [5+1]
[3] The Sheridan is claimed by four boys and girls from the Computer Club at High Heaven University.
[2] The Patton, the biggest of the tanks in the row, was claimed by a team of men led by Ricodon Varsillus, the president of the Irrowskurn VR Reenactment Organization.
[6] The Hellcat is available.
[2] The Comet was also claimed by a group of six college students.
[6] The ASU-57 and -85 are both lined up side by side, covered in mud. Nobody wanted them, and the -57 also happens to be filled with mud.
[1] The Wirbelwind's guns are currently lined up on top of its chassis, so it won't be too useful at the moment.
Choices left: 105 Sherman, M18 Hellcat, ASU-85. It's time to organize a crew for your vehicles. You need an absolute minimum of two people per vehicle, a driver and a gunner. It's possible to make do with three (Driver, Gunner, Loader/Commander), but four is ideal (Driver, Gunner, Loader, Commander) and there's enough room for five in both the Sherman and Hellcat, although only room for four in the ASU-85.

Cpt. Feldman steps out onto the field as the crews familiarize themselves with their tanks.
"Listen up cockroaches!" he bellows. "You are going to engage in armor-on-armor combat, no-holds-barred. The three chosen squads will start at corners of the training field, and move to neutralize the other squads. Commanders: Report to your starting positions as shown on your maps. If you neglected to grab one on the way out, you may exchange your crew's weekend passes for one."
He holds with him an untouched stack of maps from a table that was off to the side, near the pavilion's back exit.
The training field itself is bounded by barbed fence along the sides facing the city. However, the far side of the field terminates in "jungle," which is very uneven terrain scattered with overhangs and partially-eroded mounds of plant growth. New Terra's equivalent of a forest.
You are SQUAD 3. Scale: 0.5 km per tile.
Terrain Types:
Fields: The meadows of Irrowskurn are covered in a thick layer of grasses about 1m high, although in places near other plants (trees, swamps) where there is a source of water, the grasses will grow even taller, up to 2m.
Hills: Irrowskurn is surrounded by plains, but on these plains there tends to be a buildup of plant material over time. After centuries, living mounds of wood and vine have built up, allowing lighter vehicles to cross, while heavy vehicles tend to sink.
Trees: New Terra lacks normal trees, but communal plants tend to grow into the shape of a mound. During Spring flooding, these mounds erode away at the base, putting increased pressure on the 'trunk' and causing more roots to grow there, strengthening the base, some growing tall and thin while others grow broad depending on the type of plant. These grow like trees, and can be knocked over by heavy tanks but will block light tanks.
Swamp: At some places, there is a buildup of water that remains after the Spring floods. These places host a thriving ecosystem that lives in the mud. Giant meter-long leeches, carnivorous frogs, and mudrays with deadly toxin are among the local critters you might find here.

City of Irrowskurn, 2330 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
I'm probably going to regret doing this, but... this is our first actual training run... and I don't know what everyone else is capable of, yet.
Whoever is backup driver, and possibly the loader as well, I invite them up to my end of the Hellcat and try to show them around the gunner's controls as best I can. We're probably not gonna shoot anything yet, anyway, and it'd be good to have at least one other person who can fulfill multiple roles should one of us need to get out of the vehicle or is otherwise incapacitated.
If whoever is spotting for us alerts to the presence of the enemy, I immediately get back in the gunner's controls and prepare to fire on command.
You show Shirou how to use the scope. (d6: 5) He picks it up quite well. In fact, he mentions something about having used a scoped rifle once. It's not much different here.
Nobody is spotted during the approach, so you don't need to worry. In the Hellcat, you and Ayn are able to peer over the edge and spot for yourselves in addition to whatever the commander is doing. Ayn doesn't really look around, though, she just sort of waits for the next minute to happen while spacing out.
"Alright, I'm choosing. We're flanking squad 2 through the clear path at full travel speed."
Raioyris sets the map down. Proceed with above plan.
".... I mean unless you guys object.... Or something."
"Everyone keep you eyes open, there's a chance that this squad two might have the same idea as us. We might be locking horns."
The plan is executed. You drive for 30 minutes through the grass. On approach, you realize that your tanks are leaving a huge trail of pushed-down grass. It's not visible from a distance, but if an enemy tank were to cut through, you could be tracked. Either way, you don't encounter anything until reaching the enemy spawn point.

[d6: 3] Raioyris isn't able to catch anything. Too much tall grass in the way. He sees Hermia, however, circling several kilometers away over the swamp.
[d6: 2] Tray isn't able to see anything. The ASU-85 has too low a profile to be of much use. Perhaps if you stood on top of the tank destroyer or climbed a tree...
[d6: 6] Gwydion, however, takes the initiative to peer through his scope and scan the horizon. He sees a splotch of olive drab in the distance, but cannot make out any features. It could potentially be an M8... but if it were, its position would be uncertain as it's too small to tell the range. (It's represented as a cone on the map)

I was thinking that but it's marked as 'M8' on the map so I kind of assumed. Have the M18 stop momentarily and use binoculars, try to keep a low profile to avoid being sighted while trying to see the M8.
You look using binoculars, getting a better look at the splotch. [n/a] It's hard to fail; that's an M8 Greyhound alright. Or at least the top of it. The lower part is covered by the grass, so you're not sure what's happened to it. Given the fact that it's been 30 minutes, you'd think they'd all be camping next to it or something.
"The Greyhounds either stuck or doing a very dangerous bait. I'm not sure that they would just leave it there in open sight."
"Unrelated to that, The ASU-85's starting to smell way too much like gasoline. I can't put that off for much longer."
"Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone? I'll get on top to check the engine compartment, and recon the object with binoculars while I'm at it."
If no one objects, then check the engine compartment while recon-ing the object to see if it's the M8.
Raioyris already identified the Greyhound.
You step out and open the grate on top of the ASU-85's engine bloc. [Difficulty: 1] As it turns out, there was a small fuel leak near one of the cylinders. You have the driver power down for a moment so you can safely tape it over. It's a trivial task.
We have binoculars, don't we? Can't we use those to see more details? Perhaps someone really should peek out for a better look. I volunteer, if no one else will.
Also, let's be very careful about our moves, here. They could be decoying us with that M8 and the Comet is hiding on our side of that open ground, ready to swoop in and hit us from the flank. A tank spotted all the way across an open field is a juicy target. Perhaps a bit too juicy? I mean, the ASU-85 can only fire forwards, so if it advances and gets stuck in the open... we're kinda screwed.
If I'm the one looking out with the binoculars, I scan the area around the M8 for the Comet or anything else out of place. If I don't see it there, I check the field and everywhere else in a 90-degree cone centered on that blob of olive drab.
If not, or if we really are going to move now instead of actually taking time to scout, then I stay on the gun, seeing what I can with the scope.
[d6:- +1 (focused search)] You scan around with the binocoulars, looking for the Comet. You can safely conclude that there's nothing out of the ordinary, just some mounds, shrubs, and a lot of grass. You can't see anything in the swamp, though. Not from this distance.
(I'm gonna start hiding observation rolls from now on)
[d8:-] Ayn takes a quick glance around and notices nothing, for what it's worth.
[d6:-] Shirou also climbs up to look. He thinks he sees an object moving very slowly toward the west, to the south of your tanks, in open field. It's difficult to cleanly resolve, even with binoculars. It is very far away.

City of Irrowskurn, 2330 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
M18 continues east while continuing to spot, ASU moves closer to optimal gun range to hit the M8.
You instruct Mia to turn right and head out into the field slowly, while everyone else spots with binoculars in the now-crowded turret. Reports:
[-] Raioyris: Still nothing from the M8.
[-] Gwydion: Nothing but the rustling of grass.
[-] Ayn: The coast is clear.
[-] Shirou: He claims to hear the report of a machine gun, a very quiet report, but cannot pinpoint it.
"The smell's only IN the ASU, so it's not going to be an issue. Not any more then the smell of gasoline tanks usually emit."
"Anyway, yeah, you can go and check it out.We should try to see if there's any signs of movement in the M8. That could change things dramatically."
You give the order! Jeremy hits the gas and the vehicle lurches forward. You remain in the cupola, keeping an eye on the M8.
You approach firing distance safely. You are about 2km into the field, and Trucy thinks she has a good shot, although she didn't get much practice at the range. She awaits the order to fire.
The tank is crewed by three at the moment, as Jacob left to climb a tree and observe the thing in the south.
"I'll get up in a tree, notntoo far from here and see what's what. Sound good?"
You climb up the mightiest tree in the whole forest, which is about 20m high. This gives you a decent vantage point for the surrounding terrain, and allows you to realize that the grey object is not that far at all! It looks like an animal, sort of like an elephant, with a trunk and two flaps coming from its head.
It's actually walking toward the Hellcat.

City of Irrowskurn, 2400 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
"Yeah, we should probably wait to ambush the Comet. We don't want it getting the drop on us."
"Since it's not that close to the ASU though, I think it's safe to close in on the greyhound a little more, maybe half a kilometer at most. It should've noticed us by now, so the cre probably bailed."
[4] The Greyhound doesn't move its barrel at all. It's like shooting fish in a barrel, although you don't shoot yet.
"Let's find a hiding spot. All we need to do is make sure we aren't immediately in the sights of the Comet when it turns over here."
Proceed with plan.
[1] You move the Hellcat into the swamp in order to camouflage it. Unfortunately, the ground underneath it isn't giving much traction. You continue to camouflage the vehicle until it looks like a large shrub, but on the other hand you won't be able to move out of this position without assistance or some kind of work.
The terrain around the vehicle is mildly torn up.
Well that's just great. If the wind's blowing west to east then whatever this is might have caught our scent. Roaming male of some species, perhaps? Can I, or someone else who sees it, make a Lore check or something to recognize the creature?
[2] You're not really familiar with the wildlife on this planet. The vast majority of work is done in the city. There is almost no infrastructure in the outlands. Resources and such are shipped by air.

Name, Age: Travis Eaton, 32
Clade: Panthrope
Appearance: Eaton stands at six-foot-one, weighing in at around 160 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.
Bio: Travis Eaton was born 30-odd years before the Siege. His father was a mechanic, and it seemed hereditary. When he was 8, Travis disassembled a clock (although he couldn't put it back together again). As he grew older, his father took Travis under his wing, tutoring him in the art that is mechanics. Travis was soon spending more time in the workshop than in school, and he dropped out entirely at 17. Instead of going to school, Travis took a job at his father's garage.
Eaton worked under his father for a few years, but he chafed at the way he never got any credit. Eventually, after three years, he set out on his own, starting a car repair shop on the other side of the city. Money was tight, but he survived. For a decade, Travis Eaton happily repaired any vehicle you brought to him.
The Siege ruined all that. The supply of cars to repair dried up, and Eaton's business died with it. He was forced to sell off his garage. After making a living off of odd-jobs for a while, the mechanic decided to enlist. After all, the army was the only place left with any decent technology.

>Judgemental: Travis often impulsively berates anybody he catches making a mistake.
>Build it Better: Travis can examine any nearby vehicle to find its flaws and weak points. While doing this, he stands very still for a short period of time, mumbling about he "would've built it better than these amateurs."

((Sorry the bio is kinda meh. I'm a bit tired right now, and when I'm tired, writing skills go out the window. Also, I realized after writing this out that there's another engineer. oh well.))
City of Irrowskurn, 2400 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
Well, retreat to the ASU. Hidden, mind you.
((Sorry, forgot your recon bonus. It's not relevant anymore, but oh well))
[d6: 4] You make it down the tree and back to your post on time. Trucy moves to the side and starts playing with a shell.
"Shirou come with me. Grab a shovel." Raioyris hops off of the tank Gwydion, feel free to fire when you judge it to be necessary."
Dig away mud from front and rear of treads. Find some wood/material to put in front/behind the treads to give extra traction.
Drive closer?
"We should still wait for the Comet to be dealt with before finishing off the Greyhound. I'll leave the Comet in the Hellcats hands."
Have the tank drive a couple hundred meters closer. look out the hatch with binoculars to see if there is any crew even in the vehicle.
The ASU drives somewhat closer. {d8: -} Jacob trains his sights on it but can't conclude there's no one at the MG. [d6: -] With your binoculars it's much easier to see. It's probably empty.
Jacob gets all the time in the world to aim, so his next shot will be more accurate (+1 to roll). Additionally it's an ambush (it will use his d8).
"We'll go stationary for now, hopefully by the time we need to move we'll be done down here."
You dig out slots for the treads and prepare some stalks and exposed roots which you and your crew sawed off and set aside. There's still a lot of upturned mud everywhere which might make it obvious your tank was camouflaged, but it would require someone actively looking for a camouflaged tank.
[Camouflage level is d6: 4. This is the difficulty for the enemy]
The tank's engine roars. Its driver seems somewhat inexperienced, slamming the gas at times and coasting at others, always unable to get a grasp of what speed he is going at.
(d6:-) Gwydion sees the Comet drive up past a large proto-tree, a mound with a thick trunk of many separate root fibers, most of which have not yet coagulated under structural stress.
The tank rolls closer over open field. It is about eight kilometers away, Gwydion tells. Its turret is facing dangerously close to your way, though, and it's not unlikely you'll be spotted after the first shot.

City of Irrowskurn, 2430 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
The animal continues to approach and lifts its trunk level to the ground while retracting its ears. It then raises its head high up while rotating it back and forth.
The preparations made earlier allow the Hellcat to escape from the mud, thanks to the logs in the ground and mud cleared around it. [d6: 6] However, the creature reacts to this and walks closer. It does not charge. It does point its trunk your way.
Both tanks are now mobile. Smoke continues to rise from beside the M8. The Comet's crew emerges from the hatch, and you can see them waving their arms in unison. It seems they want you to come over.

City of Irrowskurn, 2500 Orbital Time, Day 140, 79 A.E.
It seems have winded down. But there is still a squad out on the loose, and they know your position.
Spotting:
[-] Wunderkatze: You look around and spot a presence in the swamp. It's not an animal, you see... pink bunny ears and a pink hoodie. Animals don't wear those. You don't remember who wore such clothing at the base. The figure is running away, back into the swamp, toward the northwest.
[-] Ayn: She notices that the comet crew is now sending morse code. With their cell phone flashlights. "That's kind of cute..."
She flips over the map and sure enough there are some emergency procedures on the back, including morse code tables. There's also instructions on how to use medical equipment... and a warning not to walk into the swamps on foot.
[-] Tray: Sees nothing from his current position. However, there doesn't seem to be any crew in the M8. Nobody's getting out of the flipped vehicle. That could also mean...
No, but it might be able to flip it over, and then they'd all be trapped because they couldn't even open the tank's hatch to dig out. I have no idea how aggressive -- or playful -- this thing is. Some animals, like bears, will knock whole trees down just for fun or as a display of strength to a potential mate.
Now that's a wild idea. I wonder if our tanks' gasoline smells like swamp gas or pheromones or something, and this alien elephant thinks that's pretty familiar and is doing a mating call? Maybe it's sticking its trunk out on reflex to wrap around the trunk of another of its kind.
In this case, that'd probably be our tank cannon.
Which means we'd be just making this much, much worse by pointing the gun at it.
It might be reproductive behavior, or it might be playful imitation. After all, if parrots are so smart, why can't larger creatures be? Either way, [4] not tracking it with your gun seems to be dispelling its advances. It's probably looking for some second half of the ritual performed by the female, and since it's not getting it it's losing interest.
Eww... "Let's get moving. Let's contact the training officers to inform them of this animal encounter."
... ... Should we, um... get moving before it tries humping one of our tanks?
"Yeah, lets... get a move on I guess. If the Comet keeps their engine off they should be safe. Though maybe luring it towards us will be fruitful."
Yes indeed. Your drivers ask, where to?
