Mountains of unusable "Partial Skeletons
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:27:49 pm »

My refuse pile is choked of partial skeletons of dozens of beasts that evidently I can't extract anything useful out of.
How do I turn a "skeleton" into usable bones?

Some people claim that if you wait long enough, they'll eventually turn into bones. I've never observed this, myself, and if it isn't actually true it means that there is no way to do it.

not to mention things like feathers, hoofs, nervous systems.  I mean WTF are you supposed to do with a refuse pile full of '"nervous tissue" ???

They never rot away. Ever. Not even after decades of in-game time.

Dump them into the atom smasher or into magma and the problem will be resolved.

I think the method of death affects how long it takes for bodies and body bits to rot into usable bones.

Creatures that die from falling, you seem to get some bones from quickly - a couple months or so.

Creatures that die from blades or piercing weapons seem to take a long, long time. Years, if ever.

I suspect what's really happening is that severed limbs (including upper/lower bodies) rot into stacks of usable bones while [mutilated] corpses just decay into useless [partial] skeletons.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

which is a serious pain when you have over a dozen "partial skeletons" of trolls, elk birds, troglodytes and more...and it's all USELESS

Mantis is that way >>>.

Also I don't know if there's an item token for a partial skeleton... If there is then it would be trivial to make a reaction. If someone finds out, please inform us.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Exerpt from townbrush.txt by Internet Kraken:

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

Hooves can be used as horns, at least as far as crafts are concerned.

I hear that blind cave ogres eat bones.

You should capture one and throw the remains into his pit. :D See if he gobbles 'em up! and if he doesnt, then the filth strewn around down there is part of his ogrish charm!

^^Butchers can only butcher a skeleton.  That is a fully formed skeleton, such as those left behind by animals when you abandon a fort.

A partial skeleton is still in the rotting process and cant yet be butchered
