Having problems with adding an inorganic stone (mineral)
« on: April 02, 2013, 05:42:43 pm »

So I recently added a stone to the raws but every time I generate a map it never shows up anywhere, i purposefully increased it's chance for being found and made it equal to that of microcline but still can't find it... can anyone help Urist McNoobModder?

You probably have just got unlucky. 100 isn't actually that high of an occurrence chance (the number there isn't a percentage, it's the number of entires the game sticks into a hat of all of the valid entries, so for example if you had 10 stones with 100 each then and you were only picking one each would have a 10% chance). My suggestion is that if you really want it to be common you add another zero or two to that number.

Hmm... either I am highly unlucky or there is a flaw in my code, even adding 7 zeros didn't solve my problem...

Something that did occur however is adamantine appearing above ground just as commonly as microcline, may be a glitch or an indirect effect of my modding.

Have you been generating a new world after each edit? Adding a new stone requires a regen, and changes to the ENVIRONMENT:XX tokens won't have any effect until you regen.

Good morning!

Reiterating what others have said:

1. Check errorlog.txt - it won't ALWAYS tell you exactly what's going on, but it will usually at least give you a clue.
2. If in doubt, always gen a new world. Some things don't require it, but you can be fairly certain geology will.

Also, from my own experience, the frequency numbers all cap out at 100, anything more is either ignored or may cause strange behaviors. You can reduce the frequency of competing stones to effectively increase the frequency of your new material (I fiddled with this a LOT working on my MMO mod, and Deon has also spent much time adjusting material frequencies in Genesis).

Something simple to try: use a common layer stone like Gneiss or Gabbro (I seem to see a lot of both!) and see if it works there. You can also have it show as VEIN and CLUSTER_SMALL as well as CLUSTER if you really want it all over the place.

The best and easiest way to add something is to copy an existing material, and then make appropriate changes, rather than trying to write everything out yourself. Good luck!

Rochndil, always looking for the easy ways to do things...

Yes I have... I have gone through ~15 worlds
