Right now, Valor is probably the most useless of the team (no offense, BMM42) against anything that isn't Armored. Whereas Riven and Sal are both highly useful, even un-promoted. Therefore, I vote Hero's Crest for the reasons BMM42 listed.

For some reason, Mercenaries are really useless until they promote in the GBA games. (For me, at least.)

For example, Raven from FE7, Gerik from FE8. Both were actually rather fragile, had relatively low dodging rates and did paltry amounts of damage UNTIL they promoted to hero.

Whereupon they start to kick ass.

You can get soldiers in PoR and RD. Not in GBA games without hacking, though...

No you don't, but the enemy has soldiers and they fill pretty much the same function. And in the Gamecube/Wii games, Nephenee is a soldier on your side and she's pretty jack-of-all-trades.

Welp. I'm still on the hedge between Valor and Riven, but it is true that Riven's still useful without the promotion. If Valor can survive for longer with it and provide some damage, I'm for it.

Out of curiosity, BMM: are you going Hero or Commander? I forget. Commander seems a lot more useful considering how often we're cramped up in tight spaces together.
