The searing flames shot up into the sky, freed from their prison deep within the earth, finding refuge with their old ally, air. The skies began to shimmer and boil as the powers of those two elements combined. But air was careful to keep it's ally hidden, above the clouds, as it courted the sprites of the deep seas. Reaching an accord, water extended its support to the winds, and soon the skies darkened and became thick with dark, roiling clouds.
Only in the last hours would fire and water discover their mutal ally's deception, and by then it was too late to stop the storm.
Powerful lighting split the skies, striking the great trees with such fury that it sent splinters into the highest realms of the skies, and where it struck the earth the ground split and burst open, cracking apart the new islands. Great whirling cyclones ripped across the waves, tearing up anything in their path, and great hurricanes pulled at the new islands with such force that it broke them apart and flung enormous chunks of rock and new earth hurtling into the waves. The heavens seemed to erupt in hideous laughter as lighting boomed across skies, as air's moment of victory was at hand.
In its last hours, wood realized it would not survive the coming storm, and in a last desperate act, it twisted itself into spears, growing great limbs reaching towards the heavens, seeking out the heart of air's power in a last act of retribution. The furious winds lashed back and began to rip them apart. Lighting blasted them to splinters as they grew. With the combined powers of fire and water at its disposal, air had total dominion over this world.
Just as the last of wood's great trees began to crumble, suddenly great spires of rock stabbed forth from deep beneath the waves, spearing itself between the winding branches of the last great trees. The great spires of rock shielded the trees from the wind, giving them the resilience to withstand the winds. With its last breath, wood forced its trees to spike heavenword, following the great pillars of stone into the skies, and there, they burst into one last bloom.
For one brief moment, the entire sky was blotted out by a beautiful canopy of green.
The storms ripped into the trees, tearing them apart, but it cost air dearly, and the winds were diminished. Air's laughter turned first to shrieks and then to dying whispers, until all that was left was the faint whistling between the countless spires of rock and splintered wood.
