I just keep getting 'access denied' whenever I try to see the Encyclopedia. Is that supposed to happen?

Take "Mind Scribe", whatever that does.

Dodge any attacks that come my way and run off in a random direction, hopefully into a cave system or a mage's tower or something.

Shove a pamphlet in these guy's hands, step between them and start babbling on about leveling up. If they get through my spiels, give them FREE EXPERIENCE!TM Oh, and if anyone attacks me, distract them with the power of leveling! And pamphlets.
