[16] The Captain takes a look around the Command Post, then, bluntly, "I don't know much about military strategy like this-- but if this post falls, won't it take the line with it? Is that not why they are holding the line?"

Doesn't have to be a long wait-- just a pause, so's somebody can tell us "no wait that's stupid" if need be.
oh right. Makes sense

Hmm.  Why did the officer say that Eric is holding the front while they retreat if they can't retreat without losing the line?  I don't really understand what the situation is, though admittedly fighting isn't my strong suit.

I see two possibilities here.

1: The officer that spoke to us-- his squadron was in tatters, and in the process of retreating while Eric's forces took up the position it vacated. A changing of the guard.

2: ...the Line is crumbling, and Eric is buying time for his fellow Crusaders to escape. This has, after all, been a losing war.

We really need to preserve the line if we want our changes to be helpful.  Engage beetle wings and helmet with air filtration, fly and hide in the clouds/smoke, and go to the enemy's artillery while hidden to see what the situation is.  For the line to hold, the artillery must be dealt with.

[12 vs 20] "Lady Alphira." The Captain begins as they move forward into the tattered remains of the camp, "Thorton war doctrine is simple-- unrestrained aggression. I am disobeying your orders. You may demote me after this battle if you see fit." Without another word, the Warmachines stride forth.

[4][17] Stunned, you have difficulty directing your wings to unfurl from your back. There's a moment where you consider shaping them into their vaguely insectoid appearance, but you reconsider based on the situation. It sounds like a good way to draw friendly fire.

[Affirmative. Would you like me to connect to your ally's radio signals?]

A mask of gold and black seals your face, and you remind yourself to check and see what it looks like when you're finished with this. The air quality changes become filtered and stale. You ignore all the heartbeats around you, focusing on the line in the distance. A small radar pops up, showing you the Warmachine's advance towards the encroaching front.

[18] You exhale a sigh of annoyance and let yourself rise into the air. The camp fades beneath your feet, and you hear the Crusaders cry out in happiness. You rise above, into the smoke and the cloud, trying to get a fix on the location of the artillery. Having analyzed the firing lines, you know that they are behind a hill, across the battered and exploding no man's land. Looking down, the Warmachines are laying down heavy suppressing fire while approaching the Crusader Lines, blowing away the opposition. Las-pulse plinks harmlessly off their armor.

[20][20] You breathe out a sigh, staring at the line, where the Crusaders are dying, then glancing at the hill-line hiding the artillery. Fire begins to lick at your hands, and you begin to feel a rage rise up within you. It's too familiar. Too much of a reminder of your childhood for you to let it go without a response. Rage, anger, frustration, it all turns into willpower, exploding outward--

From below, you're sure, the sudden firestorm that burns in the air must look like a miracle-- and you're quite proud of it. seven shining wings of super hot fire rip across the sky, easily [ten meters] from tip to tip, and around them burns a roaring firestorm of crackling hydrogen and energy. You're surprised at how easy it is--

This is what we were made for.

[16] The battle ceases below, as the Infected and Crusader alike halt their attack. You can feel their beady black eyes upon you, and the Crusaders are quick to open fire once more, reinvigorated, no doubt, by the intense heat that burns away the cold winds... you consider your next move, shifting to one side or another to avoid the sporadic las-fire. Maybe you should just give in to this rage and frustration you feel.

You take a steadying breath, controlling your emotions as you come to approach the Infected Artillery. They twist your stomach when you see them. Silvery, metallic bones hold together collapsing barrels, with sinuous pulsating flesh filling in where the bone cannot reach. Bodies are twisted near where a control panel would be, with far too many eyes. Some are twisted purely to load shells into the abomination, and the machine slowly turns on long insectoid legs.

[7+2 vs 11] Shots crack into your shield as you go behind enemy lines, you ignore them. You take hold of your emotions, hovering above the Infected Artillery Line, as the cannons twist to face you, recognizing you as the greater threat. You twist your halo of fire forward, exploding a cannon shell in the air, overheating it in an instant.

Like a conductor, tying your halo to your hands, you twist it down into a straight line of cracking plasma. The ground steams up fresh water, only feeding the burning reaction with more hydrogen as you use it to scour the Infected from the valley. They burn blue, green, and red, screaming comprehensively. Artillery shells explode as they overheat, causing more damage. Cannon barrels fall to the ground as the Infected muscle holding them together is purged with fire. You cannot count how many abominations burn.

[15] It exhausts you, twisting the fire back into your crackling corona. The Artillery has been burned away to nothing, the metal barrels warped and fallen.

[14+2 vs 20] You hover towards the line, watching carefully. The Crusaders are still falling-- too fast, the Infected fighting ferociously despite the heavy lost they are sustaining.  Something roars in the western distance.

[Something big is approaching. Similiar sound profile to Rostadt. Larger.]

[14 vs 13] You grin, letting yourself fall to the ground, lashing out with your corona, burning through the abominations at the center of the trench. With a twist of your hands your corona straightens, ripping through the opposing line, screams of inhuman enemies following it as you burn away the FILTH THAT DARES TO TREAD UPON YOUR PLANET.

[10+2 vs 9] "Over the top! Regain our ground, Crusaders! Alphira protects! Send a message to the north and south flanks!" Somebody shouts, and at your back is the remnant of the Crusader line, the Thornton Warmachines providing heavy suppressing fire as the group makes their way across the muddy and cratered no man's land, no doubt seeking the fortifications in the distance.

You laugh, grateful for the mask, because you're enjoying purging these filthy beasts perhaps a little too much.

[15] Your wall of Inferno advances in front of you, never faltering, not yet, burning anything that doesn't flee. Insects rip themselves from the ground, four of them, suddenly charging. It will be difficult to maintain--

[11+2 vs 5]Warmachines hurl themselves at one, a cutter blade flashing through the sky. It misses, and he's knocked aside, but his allies do not miss. An Inferno shotgun rings out, blasting away flesh and forcing a keening scream from the beast as tentacles lash in frantic pain.

[15+2 vs 3] A Crusader rushes forward to protect you, lifting his Cutter blade and impaling the Bug as it raises on to its hind legs for an attack. It goes still, falling towards him, and he rolls out of the way.

[13+2 vs 1] [6+2 vs 1] The other one falls to a rapid barrage of las-fire, screaming as its flesh explodes outward into steam. The Thorntons hack apart the last Insect with savage efficiency.

[3][4] You reach the next trench, finding abominations. "Keep clear." Your voice is already magnified, and the order is relayed efficiently. Like a fog, your willpower goes to the lowest point--  nothing happens for a few frantic attempts, the infected crawling their way up to try and maul your soldiers-- one nearby you falls screaming, his throat ripped out--

[19] It ignites, the trenches exploding with sudden fire. The air is filled with keening of your foes, and the Crusaders take their places in the new fortification, killing the injured Abominations. You haven't gone fifty feet, and yet the Crusaders scream your name in victory. The Wasteland, for the time, is empty, and the Crusaders fortify themselves for the next rush.

You note, with pride, that to the north and south, the Crusaders are pushing back, reclaiming their place like their brethren.

[Rodstadt Infected close enough to be a threat. Fifty meters.]

"HAIL ALPHIRA!" A familiar voice beside you screams, you glance over, finding Eric standing a safe distance away, on his knees, a cutter blade in one hand and an illegally modified las-rifle in the other. His helmet hangs from the strap, from his neck, and after you glance at him, he slips it back up, jumping into the trench and inspecting his soldiers.

Eat quickly.

"It's nice to see you, Eric.  Prepare for a difficult battle.  Expect a gigantic worm-like being with many tentacles and a screech that instills fear.  It's major organs are in its torso and it will be here soon."

[5] "One of those-- I need a runner to the artillery, white flare, fire in f--" Static fills the air as it approaches the fortification, a scrambling hiss of data that worms itself into your brain painfully. The Crusaders double over, but you note, with a glance, that they have cloth stuffed into their ears. It slithers into view, churning the ground beneath it. When it sees you, it rises up on its tail, letting it coil beneath it. You swallow the nutrient ration down, coughing out some of the vaguely vanilla-flavored dust.

This Colossus has a silvery shell that coils and writhes organically around its thick body. With [twenty feet] of tail resting beneath it, [fifty feet] rises to throw a shadow upon the land. With its armored carapace and thick body, it's nearly [fifteen feet] wide. Twenty tentacled arms, as long as it is, slither down, tipped with cruel, scything blades, dragging across the ground. Lightning rises from its form, lashing into the air above, red from the dust in the atmosphere. The faces all down its side are all twisted into screams -- crusader helmets also jut out from the armor, embedded into it by the same process. Your soldiers fire upon it, but it pays them no mind, its many eyes fixating on you.

"W̵̤̰͇͇̪e͏͈̬̜̣̖̻͓̮̠̹̞͕̱̯̪͎̩͘ ͏̷͎̞̳̬͉͔̫̮̻̀͟m̡̢͚̟̳̥͕̞̻͓̳̩͍̩͚̠̟ȩ̸̧̣̻͕̯̭̜̘̭͎͕̀͠e̡̨̦̻̲͔̝̰̝̘ͅt̶̹̭̮̥̺̝̣̤̥̱̫̜̜̟̼́͜ ͘͘͝҉̨͎̤̫͚̻̝̣̦͎̖ͅą҉̨̖̙̥̰̣̠̹̺̺̰͔͓ͅg̴̵̠̰̹͇͠a҉̡͇̜̖̱̩̙̜ͅi͏̵̢͔̭̘̖̘̠̱n̷͏̡̤̣͍̳̝͢͜.̵̼̼͕̗̳͙̫̺̱̺̞̭̦͎̥̗̘̙͡͠ͅ" It's voice of static burns into your mind. It screams once, and from behind it streams Abominations. The Crusaders engage the best they can while in the shadow of the beast.

[2-2] [3-2] They don't come-- and those in the trenches scatter as the scything blades begin to rip through the air, struggling out of the fortification and into open no-man's land.

[4-2 vs 5] You try to lift off, only to have those scything blades snap into your shield with enough force to send you sprawling into the no man's land's muddy ground. The static fills your bones, making it hard to think as your body converts it into garbled and twisting messages that ruin your arithmetic.

[3][13] You twist the earth forth, lifting it into a sudden spike to impale the creature and stop those writhing blades, but--

[17 vs 20] There's a pop as your shield cracks from the impact of the tentacles, as they crush your spikes and slam into your shield once again. You once again taste mud.
