We can escort it ourselves and use our will to contain it if necessary.  If we can find a critical weakness, we'll be one step closer to victory.

It's easy to say "we'll be careful"... how are we going to transport this stuff?
can we put it in ethanol without setting said ethanol on fire? Or would that not even sterilize? Maybe we should just let them burn it
EDIT: what if we coax the earth around a section on the ground to form a small wall around a piece and form a connection on top of it, then take the earth shape with the sample encased within? Like
Code: [Select]
-=ground
,=plague substance
o=earth formation

          ooo
          o,,o,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
——-—————-——o————————————-
The infection doesn’t infect the ground, if it did, it would control the ground. After this, we can pick up the earth container with the infected bit still inside

That seems like it would be worth a try.  First, we have to tell them to stop burning it in its entirety.

Ha, clever! I could get behind that.
Combining everything, then...

Approach the smoldering worm. "Hold."

Let our will hang in protection about us. Draw our Cutter, and scythe free a fist-size lump of the tainted tissue-- raise clean silicon from the earth, and wrap our sample tight and swift. Cleanse our work with a swift blaze of hydrogen, and take up the sealed orb.

"As you were."

To Captain {Faith? Is Faith, yes?}: "Call in our ride-- we've done what we came here to do. The post is preserved, and I've my intel."

"And ah, captain? Thank you. Your insubordination proved valuable back there. I apologize for my show of ill confidence."
"Just..." (smirk a little) "...don't make a habit of it."

You approach the corpse just as the Crusaders are about to set it alight. They glance toward's their commander, in question, but he gives a nod. You cannot tell if its Eric or not-- the gas mask helmet combo makes them all look very similar to one another.

[20][15][11] You work swiftly, carving out a chunk of flesh and wrapping it tightly in a case of silicon. You separate the water vapor within and hold a small ball of fire around it. Nothing happens. You think you've successfully contained it. You walk away as they douse the whole corpse the best they can, a soldier stepping away to fire his las-gun at it. Its engulfed in blue and green flames, with a noxious smoke rising from it.

You form a neat handle with fresh silicon, and pass it over to a Warmachine as you and the squad leave the battleground behind. There's one final cheer for you, a 'Hail Alphira' that echoes down the line.

The command post is still in tatters, but those injured are working to put it back together. Your hovercrafts drop down as you address the Captain, who, you're quite sure, isn't Faith. The Captain nods, "I will try not to make a habit of it. But please note that we are not trained for rescue operations. Our primary task is, and was, purely rapid assault. We have some training to keep us alive longer, but medic work is not something we can do easy." He flexes his massive fingers to you in a wave as he loads the sample into a craft and settles into another.

[1 vs 9] The ride back to the Holy City takes an hour -- and its thirty minutes in when you realize that your fists are clenched tightly enough into your hands that you're drawing blood with your fingernails. That's when you notice the dancing blackness on the edge of your vision; shadowy figures of dusty gray.

Intiating shutdown. Infection based memetic virus detected within personality cores. The Interface's voice drips with ice as she informs you.

Oh dear.

Understood. A moment, please--
Quickly, to any Warmachine beside us: "Losing consciousness, no cause for concern. If I'm still out when we arrive, see me to safety-- in isolation."

Be careful, Phoebe.
To the Interface: Continue. Thank you.

Yes, I can.

The Warmachine no doubt looks very confused by your sudden announcement, his helmet tilting like a puppy's trying to understand exactly what is going on. "Uh...wha-?"

You lay down and shut your eyes tightly against the darkness that encroaches...and you dream.

A fire burns nearby, a small thing, flickering brightly against impossible darkness. You hunch over it, even as it begins to smolder into coals. A cold seeps in -- things shift in the starless night beyond the dwindling flame.

Feed the dwindling flame: slowly, with a careful trickle of hydrogen. Apply no spark of our own making, for now.

[1] There is no hydrogen here, and the flame continues to dwindle, the darkness pressing in tightly, suffocating you.

Watch the movement in the starless sky as we slowly suffocate.

[18] You step into the smoldering coals, looking up into the sky as the darkness chokes itself around you. You stop breathing as it invades your senses in totality. When you are just about to give up, all hope lost, staring into that infinite abyss above you --

It blooms. A bright white light, a pinprick in the sky. Then another. And another. Eight in total, all shining through the darkness. Motes of light dancing in infinite rhythm with one another. Their light is cold and distant, but the darkness retreats.

[15] They explode into infinite expanses of bright dust in the cold void. A golden mote drifts towards you.

Why do you hesitate? Shine with us.
