Fair. Without spending all our resources on deploying this tool soon, we could yet hold it in reserve. I propose turning over development of the antinanites to one of our ministers or those they delegate the project to, and also involve Silas in development. They can work on it autonomously - heh - while we hone the more direct military approaches we are used to.

"Nanite based warfare is...is generally something to be avoided. Usually, they're used as a component for something larger -- like us, or if the Nobles want something constructed last week. By the time we finish with all this, and are ready to unleash it...well, Magnus will be here, with ships full of Loomed Armies and more antimatter warheads than we could count." Cephie shakes her head, leaning on her hand. "And what's to stop the Plague from realizing what's going on, taking up these kill agents, and creating something like them, only for us?"

"But let me state this: Your people do not have integrated circuits yet. They do not have superalloys, or super pure chemical refining. I haven't seen a single robot or computer since I landed. The nano-printer will not work if we try to alter it. How are we to create nano weapons when your people are only just now figuring out radio technology?"

Hmm. At this point, I think the technology is too difficult and too easily exploited by our enemy. It's a shame.

True. Even going with the algae approach would likely require a [DNA sequencer], definitely above our current capabilities.

Sigh. "What's that old [chestnut]? 'A little learning is a dangerous thing'."

And a love of elegant solutions can lead astray, if one is without the tools to breathe life into it.

Sigh. "What's that old [chestnut]? 'A little learning is a dangerous thing'."

+1

An apt description of my... youthful speculations.

There's also the energy cost. The Thorntons were cutting edge by making the fusion generators small enough to carry on their backs. And that probably took years of their time and money. Nano-scaled solar panels, not to mention nano-scaled batteries...and like she said, our people still think the Plague is a demon sent to torment them. If it wasn't for SEED's teachings on personal hygiene, they would probably have put their outhouses by their wells.

You quote the old adage, taking another gulp of wine. You feel a bit more drunk, and lounge more comfortably on the cushioned sofas.

"It's a good train of thought -- " Cephie pauses, staring across at you, "That was an Ancestor's line of questioning, wasn't it?"

Look a little bit surprised, work in a tiny bit of hurt into the expression if we can. Raise an eyebrow slightly. "Why do you ask?"

I don't know why she's asking, so I don't know what a direct answer will mean to her. Better find out.

Ahh dear. Is it proper, for me to offer words?
It's a natural question. We're... not exactly the most consistent folk.

"Mm. They put up quite the cacophony sometimes."

[8 vs 20+5] "I-- why do you ask?" You stutter instead, taking a drink of your wine again. It's really quite good. Delicious, really. You've never experienced being drunk before, not even as Alphira, as rich as she was, she was still a born far far away from the galactic core and the fine, fine wines that they could manufacture for your kind. Trying to lie to an actor is a difficult task, and Cephie rises from her seat, bouncing into the cushion next to you.

"You're adorable-- some would consider it a little rude, but I'll forgive you."

"They talk a lot sometimes."

[7] "You don't have to listen to them, you know. It's your life. Mine only pop in occasionally, or when I ask them to."

"I know -- I'm not...uh good at talking, I guess, so its easier to let them do it for me. Sorry."

"They're probably the closest thing to parents you've had, especially if Alphira is gone. Don't worry too much about it." Cephie takes a sip of her wine, and you take a gulp of your's, finishing it. She finally notes your flushed face and inebriated state -- "And I think you've had enough to drink."

"What? Come on-- that was my second glass!"

"Yes, and you're used to the crap made for humans-- oh don't look so glum." Cephie protests suddenly at your frown, taking your empty glass and passing it to the automaton, "Hey, ask your Ancestors what their favorite type of [ice cream] is."

"You just did."

"Oh gods in all the heavens, you let them actively listen!?"

"How else can they provide me with their unmatched wisdom in difficult situations? For example, without hearing the question, they would not be able to impart to you their preference for mint chocolate chip."
