So I killed a dragon...
« on: September 10, 2008, 03:59:38 pm »

And now I want to butcher it.  However, when I told my butcher to butcher something, it proclaimed that there was nothing to butcher.  Aside from butchering tame dragons, how can I get dragon hide?

Usually he should automatically butcher it without you giving any specific orders

You could check to see if the dragon corpse is forbidden (if it has curly brackets around it) - if it is forbidden, select it and press "f" to unforbid it and your butcher should do hir thing.
Only other reason I could think of is if the corpse has been left so long it has rotted, although as Proteus says it should be done automatically.  That might have happened if all your dwarves were extremely busy (running around burning and screaming, for instance) for a while after the dragon died.

No, there wasn't much running and screaming.  And I don't think it has rotted yet.  It isn't forbidden.  I guess it must have rotted.

If the body is allocated to a moving job (haul body to refuse stockpile, for instance) it will be unavailable for butchering. If it is not rotten, forbid and unforbid it. That should free it up to be butchered.

Also if you have sand, turn its fat into soap. :)

Okay, it rotted at some point >:(

Next, only tangentially related question:  Do dragons breed?

No, currently no megabeasts will breed, even if you manage to get a female and a male of the same species in the same fort.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Well, without modding at least.

Okay, one final question.

If I capture and tame a Megabeast, and then abandon the fort, does the megabeast die?

Odds are it starts roaming your fortress killing your reclaim party.
