Well to be honest, except for the shapes of the variations of the Scutum, (Earlier versions were more Oval then square) We don't actually really know what Romans put on their shields, most likely they didn't even 'paint' them red, The senate(Emperor later on) probably went for the cheapest shield, which would likely just be plain shield, no designs. Pre-marian there might be designs on the shield though as you had to buy your own equipment.  (If I Read my history right)

I think the general consensus is that they're red and gold.

For the hell of it, and because I actually playtested the game with my own rules (for winning condition, and battle). Tactic to have a lot of good (in fighting) emperors got destroyed by the rule I implemented recently (" When you start the game put 3 emperors from your deck to "ruling emperor" and "senatorial emperors". None of their stats can be higher than 5) mwahahaha. I'm the nemesis for broken games. I'll fix them all, my precioussssss!. Other than that I figured that 30 card decks are fine with 4 duplicate limit. We need to do WAY more items that boost stats. Do the math. You fight one on one. And you have 3 item slots. You can quickly overcome 5 strenght opponent emperor by equiping your emperor with 3 gladiuses (kinda improbable). So I decided to make cards for javelins, spears, daggers and short swords (they will all be weak and commonly found so they will build the basis of every deck
