Age 6 is a really good photo. Breaths character. Reminiscent of one of those wonderful stories people don't remember.

This just in: Jesus was a programmer.

Carpenters create things. Programmers create things. Coincidence?

Well, Jesus turned water into wine. He obviously has access to the source code.

Was pretty awesome at photography, signed onto a photography diploma. Then dropped out of school when I realized I had no chance of a career there and started work: been through about a dozen temporary jobs and spend about a third of the time unemployed hence stuff going downhill BUT I might be going back to school later this year to study computer science so hopefully I can turn things around.

I would be wary of computer programming as a vocation.  This coming from a .com bubble burst veteran of the job market.

My advice: pick a career that is *always* in demand, and requires local talent.

I chose engineering, because Fed reqs for military work require native engineers only for national security reasons. They simply can't outsource. The law won't allow it. It is the *only* reason why there are NC programmer jobs still in the US, and not in mexico or india. For real.

Computer programming has the handwriting on the wall for another bubble burst flooding the job market with perfectly skilled but "comparably undesirable" applicants, given the flagrant abuse of the H1B visa programs I am hearing about.

I am already hearing dangerous stories about unsatisfiable job requirements for job postings in the software industry. Be very wary of the software industry if you aren't a foriegn studet programmer. For real.

Yes, I'm just starting to figure that out around now.

This is very much dependent on your location. We hired a USian network engineer and a Spanish sysadmin just because we couldn't find enough Dutch guys to do the job. Having just one skill is the risky part, but even as a pretty "normal" developer like me it was pretty easy to find a job around these parts.

Having said that, becoming an engineer (and "software engineer" doesn't count) is better than a programmer, ALWAYS. My little brother is a mechanical engineer (No idea what the real job title is but he designs/does stuff with metal parts for cars and trucks?) and he's been swamped with offers and work since the day he graduated. Personally I just do software because I never really learned how to do a proper job.

This is dependent on the company. Where I work, we do Python development. The only real requirements are that you know a relatively modern language and want to learn what you don't know.

Sure, there is a long list of technologies and languages on their job postings, but those are more for saying what you will be working with than skills you should have coming into the job.

They hired me a few months after graduating despite having no professional Python experience. They recently hired two other people from my same university, which is all Java all the time (with some C# thrown in for flavor). From what I've seen so far, it doesn't look like they have anyone here who's on a Visa. We're also doing a lot of work for basically all of the states, so I'm not sure if there are any regulations in place to prevent that.

Cheers for all the feedback guys. I'm looking primarily at research rather than developing consumer products. The eventual goal being to run/own a private lab and sell patents/training from there. Of course I won't deny an opportunity that deviates from that but essentially I'd like to create things that are completely novel and unique.
