Legendary Doctor skills.
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:21:11 pm »

When embarking with a Doc. Do any high grade skills matter? Or,

Novice Diagnostician
Novice Surgeon
Novice Suturer, etc...?

Or.

Novice Diagnostician. Dabbling everything else?
Does it evenly matter?

Any observations? Thanks!

I think, diagnosis and surgery increase speed, which matters.  If you have people rotting, a good surgeon can cut away the necrosis before it spreads, while a novice will be there cutting slower than it spreads, and you'll probably lose the patient or at least the limb.  It also helps, when you're recovering from a siege, if you have good doctor(s) you can process patients quickly and get them back up faster.

So in times of peace, spike a few haulers to keep your doctors fresh.

I find dropping to be easier, especially if you abuse something like a lever set for their use, combined with creative pressure plates, hatches, and bridges.  You can drop them 2-3 levels, patch them up, and send them straight back for more.

Of course, you could always cheat and make them legendary with Runesmith. Spike the haulers, yes...

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

This lever hatch thing sounds brilliant to send a certain dwarf back to the hospital. His hand was all messed up but he got out of bed before he should. Now he roams between beer, food and bed and constantly complains that he can't pick up his training gear or job item.

Code: [Select]
PBbHLPlate, Bridge, Hatch, Lever.
The bridge is anchored on the B, and the b and H are both over empty space.  The Lever isn't attached to anything.  The Plate is on the bridge and hatch.

Assign the lever via workshop profile, and the dwarf will run over the pressure plate on his way there.  The hatch disappears, blocking his path, so that he stops on the bridge, and then the bridge disappears, making him fall.  He then plummets, rests, doctors, and goes to pull the same lever because the Pull the Lever job was never canceled.  Add spikes and you can cause death-on-command for any unwanted dwarves, especially since upright spikes can be placed down, and make a safe landing, or put up for a lethal landing.

He won't go to the lever. I tried assigning him by workshop profile, taking him off all jobs and making a burrow for him. Even jobless, he wanted to go get his hunting gear. The burrow made him shut up, but he still wouldn't move.

If he wanted to get his hunting gear, then he's not jobless...

You get enough high level doctors as migrants. Use your embark points on booze.

All of them.

I very rarely get good doctor migrants.  I'm not one to kill migrants to generate new ones, so you'll forgive me for that...  A training option should always be better than a deadly one.

Meh... thats where your training rooms come in! Recruits armed to the teeth facing down POWs live gobbo sacrifices . Outnumbered 5 to 1. That trains up both (surviving) recruits and doctors! No waste either way!.

Bruising will generate a diagnosis, but no treatment.  Blood must be shed for the doctors to take notice.  Copper spears may be needed.
