15th Hematite
For safety's sake, I've set up a marksdwarf squad. We'll be stationed outside the arena in case the cyclops escapes somehow.

1st Malachite
dhokarena has issued a mandate for fine pewter. Fine, fine, I'll make some.

Also, we've smelted all our gold. I did tell them to take the smelting of that metal up to eleven, but it's still time to go mine more.

11th Malachite
I satisfied the previous mandate, then she told me not to export GCS silk. Whatever.

17th Malachite
The spikes are complete. On a completely unrelated note, I'm building a live training arena. Gotta do something with all those caged goblins.

19th Malachite
Migrants woo

12th Galena
A human caravan just showed up.

13th Galena
A gem setter just dropped his beer and ran off, muttering something about a brilliant idea.

18th Galena
Time to test out the arena. I've sent the Chances of Theater to stand just outside the entrance, and an official record keeper will be watching the whole thing for posterity.

19th Galena
The humans also sent a diplomat. Don't those usually arrive with the caravans?

23rd Galena
The test provided no useful information. I'm going to go move things into the tombs for a while.

28th Galena
The human diplomat or whatever wants to talk to me. And the baroness wants crowns.

Autumn has come.

2nd Limestone
Well, that was pointless. Why do humans send emissaries when they don't have anything to say?

Also, it's about time I choose the sacrifice. No dwarf will be exempt, not even children. If a baby is chosen, its mother will have to be sacrificed as well.

I list the fortress population alphabetically. There are 142 dwarves in the fort. That's 71 times 2... well, that's not easy to work with. Guess I'll just pray to the Random Number Goddess herself.

She tells me "2". She has chosen Ablel Kalurlolok.

So it is written, so it will be done. I go to inform her of her duty.

14th Limestone
And we've run through our gold.

18th Limestone
The baroness says no exporting iron.

22nd Limestone
It is done. The mayor, dhokarena, has organized a funeral to Ablel at the cobaltite table.

I was unable to make the spikes... spike. The cyclops will be executed by our marksdwarfs.

27th Limestone
Ah, spore. I forgot about our moody dwarf and he went melancholy.

15th Timber
The melancholy soul died of thirst. And a clothier is looking pretty shifty right about now...

17th Timber
The dwarven caravan and liaison have arrived.

18th Timber
And a goblin ambush with them, of course.

22nd Timber
They killed the caravan! I didn't know they could do that! Lousy goddamn stupid goblins.

27th Timber

That clothier made a bag. whoooooo

Winter is upon you.

1st Moonstone
I'm not very good at this, am I?

The caravan? You idiot! What were they carrying, and did the liaison survive?

11th Moonstone
We've been elevated to a county.

15th Moonstone
What better way to celebrate our new status than with an export ban. No exporting toy axes.

10th Opal
dhokarena wants fine pewter again.

25th Opal
The gods have seen fit to bless me with another child.

Another child was born today as well.

It's probably pure coincidence, yet I can't help thinking that they'll grow to be good friends.

27th Opal

Apparently it's babby season?

12th Obsidian
So a while back I noticed that we don't have a proper kitchen, just a few pots around a fire next to the farm.

Well, I fixed that.

It's not completely done yet; the walls are still rough and I haven't even gotten started on decoration, but it's got ice pillars to keep the booze nice and chilled.

13th Obsidian
Also, no exporting crowns. Because...............?

14th Obsidian
We don't have a jail?! If we don't have a jail, the only option for crime is to execute all offenders! That is not acceptable! Ugh, I'm running out of time...

22nd Obsidian
Where are my chains and beds? I ordered them a week ago!

Damn it, Iden, this is not a good time to go on break! Lives are at stake here!

Yes, they are criminal lives. But not execution-worthy criminals!

Spring has arrived!

1st Granite, 241
Well, it's happened. I've been informed that there was a mix-up, and in reality a dwarf named Microcline is the proper successor. They thanked me kindly for my hard work, apologized for the inconvenience, and asked for my notes.

The prison still isn't finished thanks to that worthless manager. I can only politely request that Microcline finish it during his term.

Oh? Well, of course, he isn't the proper successor either. I know who was meant to take the reins. But they'll never work it out.

Here are my notes. Our fortunes rise and fall together.

There is no doubt that Igoth is pleased with our sacrifices.  While other forts struggle to find a single vein of metal, our fortress is so blessed that we build our furniture from gold.  I spent the last year constructing gold furniture for billybobfred's tasteless microcline and gold ore house (of course, one of my first goals this year is to show him how to build a house that is tasteless, gaudy, and megalomaniacal enough to suit the overseer of a fort that practices dwarven sacrifice).

It seems that Rilgoth the Protected was taken by a strange mood.  We must make sure that he has what he needs, lest doom befall our fortress.

23 Slate
We found sand, so we should be able to set up a glass furnace

16 Felsite
It seems that the reason Rilgoth was unable to find gems was that we didn't have a gem industry.  Looking through the stockpile, I quickly abandoned my plans for glass windows in favor of a more colorful solution.

With cut gems, Rilgoth was able to complete his artifact.

24 Felsite
I had the Gilded Mechanisms sortie into the caverns to cover the opening of a new magma channel

1 Hematite
Well shit
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

3 Hematite
We managed to seal off the magma.  We lost one miner, and this has set back progress on the sacrificial chamber.  Fortunately, the magma didn't reach the forges.

11 Galena
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Using his ability to fly, he was able to slay a macedwarf and a woodcutter before being critically injured by the militia captain Dishmab Udkol.  He then staggered to the fortress, fell unconscious, and was filled with arrows by the marksdwarf squad.

12 Galena
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another bone artifact

22 Galena
We were attacked by a massive goblin siege.  I counted at least two squads of crossbowmen, a squad of lashers, a squad of swordsmen, a squad of ogres and a squad of trolls.  Our forces rallied behind the twin bridges.  Disaster struck when the squads broke formation and charged the enemy, removing our advantage.  We lost a good number of dwarves that day.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

24 Timber
I ordered coffins build into the walls of the dining hall for those who died during the siege.  We were also able to set up memorial slabs for the three ghosts haunting the fortress.

27 Timber
We are now a duchy
