Winches and conveyors?
« on: May 10, 2011, 07:23:28 am »

Essentially a winch could function like a screw pump, but moving solid objects rather than liquids up one z-level and across three x- or y-levels, depending on the orientation of the winch. It could be operated by a dwarf or powered in the same way as a screw pump (so you could build winch stacks). It could be made by selecting (b)uild (M)achine (W)inch and would require a block, a rope/chain and a mechanism. A conveyor could function in the same way, but only acting across three x- or y-levels. It could be built by selecting (b)uild (M)achine (C)onveyor and would also require a block, rope/chain and a mechanism.

Does anyone else think these would be useful or fun? I like the idea of a network of winches and cranes through a mountain hauling stones and ores to where they're needed, and there would be all kinds of interesting uses for them, a bunch of conveyors raining stones down on invaders say.

Oops, I started thinking about them as a "block and tackle" and didn't find much for that, then changed the post to winches without searching again.
