What's In Development?
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:00:57 pm »

I've been away from Dwarf Fortress for a while and i am wondering what are some of the new main features that are going on.

Read the Dev log.

Adventure mode is much more interesting, fortress mode goes much deeper, with a better chance of running into fun.

Honestly, work and school has prevented me from actually playing much at all for the past year or so, but I still read the log regularly.

The main goal was to activate the world, i.e. bring some worldgen features into the actual game. The biggest changes are visitable sites for goblins, dwarfs, kobolds and elves (including multi-tile trees). Recently, Toady implemented death and birth of historical figures after world gen.
And then there are some other features like non-lethal combat, armies moving on the world map, some changes in the quest system, climbing and jumping, combat-movement split, and a new stealth system.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

You can retire forts instead of abandoning them, so they can be picked up again later. Also, you can reclaim/take over NPC forts.

Dwarf Fortress has recently begun learning at an exponential rate, and has been entrusted with our nuclear missile launch codes.

This can only end well.

Oh, the fun that can be had with something like this.

Plus, we can have a Hatfield & McCoy thing happening between a pair of neighboring forts, if I'm reading this correctly (sounds like an interesting succession fort idea).
