Elevator shaft or something similar
« on: January 14, 2016, 07:53:28 pm »

I'm doing a surface deployment but digging down for quarries.  I can easily enough move my shops periodically to lower floors to accommodate closer stone but I'm wondering if there is a way to move stone UP from lower levels.  I'm thinking some kind of minecart could work but honestly have never worked with anything outside of basic minecarts and dumping DOWN a shaft so no idea how to make a "motorized" version that would be functional going up levels.  Any suggestions or just dwarf power it with wheelbarrows?

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

If you just want to haul stone vertically you'd probably be better off using stockpiles with wheelbarrows.  A minecart can hold 5 stones whereas a wheelbarrow can hold only one, but it'll probably take far more effort building a minecart track up and down to be worth it.

If you are making stuff that can fit into bins like blocks or crafts, you can build your workshops on the lower floors and use wheelbarrows to move the bins.

I've never been a big fan of minecarts, honestly.  Just seems a bit cumbersome for things moving up and down.

If you want to use automated mine carts I'd recommend using impulse ramps, which is an exploit where mine carts move forward/upwards despite no power (beyond an initial push) being added. There is also something called a mine cart elevator which, to me, just looks like an impulse ramp driven mine cart using a slightly different exploit (but I may easily have missed the point).

I only know of two reasons to use minecarts for moving cargo around:
  • Because you want to do it for role-playing or Fun purposes.
  • Because you have a physical gap between two sub-fortress populations, but you want to move cargo between them.

Another reason to move cargo around via minecart is when you want to project the cargo at great speeds towards invaders.

I specifically said cargo because minecart-based defense systems are a completely different application than inventory management.
