Forum Games and Roleplaying / Friskdingon (Waitlist open)
« on: April 07, 2024, 08:04:03 pm »
Friskdingon

It doesn't matter where you came from, we don't talk about that here- it's one of the unspoken rules. It is clear however, from your lighter constitution and uncalloused hands that where you came from, you weren't hunters or farmers. Still, you are determined to make it out here in The North. This clearing with a small river running past will be the beginning of your new home: Friskdingon.

What this is about and some basic Information

With you there are about 40 other NPCs living in the Village. No Chief of the Village has been chosen yet.

Currency: 1 Gold = 10 Silver= 100 copper (though no metal is mined in the Village as yet, you still stick to old conventions)

Gameplay
You will be making a schedule for 10 years. There are a few actions you can do, and potential for other actions exist. Each person can
Claim fields - 1 year - making decent farmable land in such a forested area takes a serious amount of effort to clear the brush, etc.
Hunting/Fishing/Foraging - 1 year, basically ensures you have food for the year but not very profitable unless you're really good at it.
Farm - Farm any available fields. Output depends on total field size and number of people farming. You will spend 10 food per adult, 5 per child, and any excess will be sold based on economy.
Have baby - Matriarch only, takes 1 year. Remember the year - having many children is dangerous and taxing on resources. You can reliably have children up to age 35. Trying to have children between the ages of 35 and 50 has increasingly high chances of both not working at all, and causing you or your child to die.
Explore - Your character leaves town for a number of years to explore the surrounding lands.
Raid - Spend a year Raping, Murdering, Pillaging and Burning any other people living nearby. Requires knowldegge of nearby settlements. Remember to bring along some friends. And prepare for angry folks getting back to you and Friskdingon.
Learn a trade down South - Your character leaves town for 5 years to learn a trade as an apprentice. This costs 1 gold. Example: Blacksmithing, pottery, milling, carpentry, etc...(only works of course if you know of any neighbours who have one or possibly already have one in the village. Feel free to ask about odd professions)
Build a basic house - 4 person-years. Builds something better than a teepee.
Logging - The land is rich with forests, so most timber is sold to traders. This is dangerous work but is a good way to earn coin for unskilled workers.
Other - I will allow reasonable actions and creativity, but they will be more heavily influenced by random numbers than set actions. Any "Official" action will be cataloged in the first two posts of this game.
You may perform any action as "instructive", in which case it will be undertaken at -1 skill level, but will also increase the chance people of lower skill (3 lower is best) level it up.

Other rules :
There are usually 5 notable dynasties alive at the same time (though many famous individuals don't belong to them), if one dies out a new one quickly rises to prominence (from the wait list)
You should not make the last member of your dynasty leave the Village of Finsterforst permanently. Doing is equivalent to resigning the game.
Your characters must always have food. If they do not, money will be spent at a current rate of 1 copper/food unit. This is dependent on the economy, so it is possible for your characters to run out of money/food and default to the "Hunt/Fish/Forage" action. A grown character needs 10 food units to avoid malnutrition.
Children are useless until age 10, but only consume half the food (5 units)
Children must either leave the household at age 30 or become the new patriach/matriarch. If they leave, they will provide money to the current matriach based on overall experience and health. Elders will be assumed to be retired.
You may designate any family member 20 year old and over as a new matriarch or patriach, if you do they will be automatically married to someone of the same social class unless you are willing to pay for a better class.
Skill level goes from 0 (never tried) through 1-2 (usually seen in apprentices), 4-5 (respectable professional), 7-8 (master) to a maximum of 10 (rare even in The South), with levels being exponentially harder to achieve the higher they are.
Your starting characters will come with either 3 skills at aprentice level (2) or 1 skill at professional level (4) each. Children are born with no skills and must learn them through use/instruction.

Other Games / XMAS 2023 GIVEAWAY
« on: December 05, 2023, 06:11:21 pm »
It's that time of the year again!

No one created the giveaway yet, so here I am creating it now. We're starting on time for once.

We are going from the 14th till the 31st this year.

Rules shamelessly stolen from aristabulus:

Quote

The Rules for Everyone Joining The Giveaway:

1 ) You must have made your Bay12 account before November 22, 2023. This giveaway is meant to contribute back to the community.
2 ) You must not be an Escaped Lunatic. We appreciate people who contribute to our community, so don't be shy!  :)
3 ) Link to your Steam account. since most giveaways are keys these days, this rule is now optional.
4 ) It is not necessary to donate games to participate, but definitely appreciated!  Also, you do not need to sign up to win games if you wish to only donate.
5 ) Please list all games you wish to sign up for in alphabetical order.  Please be moderate with your entries, so that everyone gets a chance to win.
5a ) The title must be explicitly stated, not in a quote or spoiler fold, for a successful sign-up.  Any variation on "me too", "this", "that", or other vague language will be ignored.

Quote
There is no firm rule for what "moderate" really means; it does kinda depend on how much is donated.  From a quick glance at last year, the person that signed up for the most stuff did not exceed 10% of the units on the schedule, and several of those were adoptions (they were the sole entrant).  Last year, I stopped counting at around 550 units donated; the final number was probably closer to 650.

So... Don't feel guilty about being liberal with your entries.  Please don't sign up for games that you don't actually have interest in playing...  but y'all can lay it on a bit thick.  If you get carried away, I'll let you know.

6 ) This is not a wishlist.  The games donated are the games available.
6a ) This is not a giveaway for your friends or family.  This is a giveaway for dorfs, by dorfs.
7 ) If you decide later to join more games, make sure you alert me that you've already signed up.
7a ) Any changes you wish to make are preferred in a format more like "Add: XYZ, Withdraw: ABC"; I only need to see the alterations.  Replace (List A) with (List B) type posts will be ignored.
7b ) Please do not edit posts to add things.  New posts are literally my intake box; once I see it and process it, it is gone from my mind.  If anything more than about 5 minutes passes, I'd rather see a double post.
7c ) It is your own responsibility to keep a list of which game drawings you have entered.  I do not have a list of all the games for which each person is signed up...  I have a list of games that have names attached; the stuff in the OP is the only data I have.  If you don't remember all your entries, you can quote the schedule sign-ups post and use Find (ctrl+F) to search within the quoted post.
8 ) If there are multiple copies being offered for a single game, or if more copies turn up later, you only need to sign up once...  you're in it 'till you win it!
8a ) I will not be adding names directly to remainder lists.  When a new copy appears, remainders get reinstated, and anyone else can sign up like normal.
9 ) You must acknowledge that you've read these rules.
10 ) Failure to follow the rules may result in a variety of responses, including but not limited to: polite nudging, civil ignorance, being offered up as a flesh sacrifice to eldritch horrors, criminally terrible puns.

-------

The Rules for Game Donators:

1 ) I do not choose who wins your drawings. This is to maintain fairness; I will only be keeping the lists up to date, to keep things flowing smoothly for everyone.
2 ) Do NOT send me the game.  I'm just The Guy Wot Wrangles Lists.
3 ) If your game is NOT on Steam, please let me know when you sign up.
3a ) The Humble Store has gone back to a simple key generator for Steam copies, because Valve deprecated the API that ran the whole link-your-steam-account system... much simpler for everyone, including us.
3b ) If you are located in a country with a currency that is weak on the global market, any donations you might have will be region locked.  Please see this article and thisreddit post for more information.

4 ) Donations must be a game, or a game related item (like an expansion or DLC).  Bundle leftovers (like F2P starter/booster packs, or beta keys if still relevant) are allowed, but don't be surprised if no one bites.  Coupons are not allowed.
4a ) Cash equivalent "wild card" gifts are not allowed; they generate too much work for a single item, and they make people a little crazy.  For people that want to donate but don't know what to get, I'll be making a suggestion list in the days ahead.
5 ) Post the name of the game(s), and the date(s) you wish to give away.  Alphabetical order will save me time.  I would vastly prefer if people picked their dates.  If no dates are stated, I will find spots on the schedule; let me know if you'd rather do all-on-a-single-day or spread out.  Please keep in mind your availability / holiday plans / etc., and keep me informed so I don't schedule you for a day you can't make it online.  If a conflict occurs, tell me ASAP, so we can reschedule the drawing.
5a ) If your donation is more than 8 items, I'd appreciate if you'd PM me the list first, so I can do some formatting before it is publicly posted.
6 ) You are responsible for showing up on the day(s) in question to do the drawing and declare the winner.
6a ) A common method for finding the winner of a drawing is to copy-paste the name list into random.org's List Randomizer, hit randomize 5 or 6 times, and copy-paste the results into your post... the name that floats to the top of the list is the lucky winner!
6b ) If your game is scheduled alongside identical donations on the same day, please discuss timing with the other donators, so that winners are correctly removed from subsequent drawings.

FOR DONATORS: Please link to the steam page or some other identifier if possible (its ok if you dont, it just makes my life harder)
please mention if a game you are giving away has no entrants when you would have given it away

In general: I'll try to keep things correct, but mistakes may occur so please point them out for me.

If a game is unclaimed it will go to the orphanage to become first come first served.

After the 1st of next year any games still unclaimed will be the donator's problem I guess.

Creative Projects / Seeking Worldbuilder for Ventures by Torchlight 3
« on: November 13, 2023, 10:21:22 am »
Q: How much does the position pay?
A: This is not a paid gig; We're making a forum game, so no one is making any money.

Q: What is "Ventures by Torchlight"?
A: See for yourself

Q: Dude, that's like 40 pages of stuff. Use your words.
A: VbT is a semi-cooperative game where players purchase and outfit adventurers who go into dungeons and have adventures. The dungeons are completely automated.

Q: Your concept seems somewhat popular, so what is wrong?
A: The game is boring. There is not enough crafting recipes, the lore* is lackluster and the world doesn't make sense.
(*) I tried to crowd source the lore, with rather predictable results.

Q: So what do you want from me?
A: Someone needs to write out the world history, so it makes sense and is fun to discover. A secondary concern is making more crafting recipes.

Q: I don't like the current setting can I make it horror/cyberpunk/modern/ whathaveyou ?
A: Yes. You will have full creative freedom.

Q: Can I add new mechanics?
A: Yes please.

Q: Cool, cool, I make all the hard stuff,  so what will you do?
A: I am responsible for the engine that makes the adventures work. Anything you come up with I will code.

Q: What if I want to use this all somewhere else?
A: You will retain full copyright of your work, though I would very much appreciate a mention in the credits.

Q: I noticed VbT2 is till ongoing...
A: I will try to get that game to a conclusion the natural way, before it runs out of players. This just means we have some time to do this project properly. Not that we have to publish right away after VbT2 ends.

Q: I have another question!
A: please ask.

Mafia / Blind Mafia (recruiting)
« on: November 03, 2023, 05:35:43 am »
So this is going to be either brilliant to idiotic (probably the later.) What if you didn't know who the (dead or alive) players were?
Due to the unbalanced nature of this setup, it's obviously just for the lulz.

The rules are as follows:
Among the players is 1 guaranteed henchman (part of Mafia, who collectively may kill 1 person each night)
There may also be one or more of the following (sorry, I don't know the terminology, feel free to tell me what these are actually called):
  • Blocker (may prevent one person from carrying out their role at night. Must choose correctly between Don and Henchman to prevent the Mafia kill.)
  • Cop (may investigate one person per night to find out if they are Town-aligned or Mafia-aligned)
  • Coroner (may investigate one dead person per night to find out if they were Town-aligned or Mafia-aligned)
  • Doctor (May prevent one death from happening to another player at night. The target still dies if they're killed by two different players at the same time.)
  • Don (part of Mafia, who collectively may kill 1 person each night. As long as Don is alive they have the final say in who mafia kills that night)
  • Homeopath (Think they're a "doctor". Has no actual ability)
  • Lawyer (Knows who the Mafia are, but can not kill at night. Wins with Mafia)
  • Maverick (Thinks they're a "cop". Kills target of the investigation, after getting the read.)
  • Vigilante (may kill 1 person per night. Aligns with town)
Everyone else is a Citizen (has no abilities whatsoever, wins if alive and town wins)

Now for the twist(s):
When a player dies their role is not announced.
The game only ends if a "No-lynch" decision is reached*, at which point if any mafia aligned players are still in the game they win (and everyone else loses.) And if there are none, everyone still alive wins (but the dead people still lose.)
(*)If only two players are left, they are automatically assumed to not lynch.

A ship comes in to the Chamark Haven, a recently founded port (if you decide to use the word loosely) on the isle of Charmark. Charmark is a island of great secrets as it seems to contain dungeons of an unknown precursor civilization. Off the ship come a few gentlemen (and ladies) of means and a larger number of unfortunate souls who had to indenture themselves to afford the voyage. A spirit of adventure drives both nonetheless, for it is known that the local guides will take you to an abandoned ruin, potentially full of treasure, for but a string of beads. A fortune can be made here as readily as a life can be lost

This is a reboot of the previous VbT theread.
Spoiler: List of changes (click to show/hide)

What is this: This is a Risky Venture style game. You are one of the lucky few who came ashore with their freedom intact, and start with 3 Florins (₣) and nothing else (You can copy the 'Starter Items' spoiler below and rename as necessary) Your job is to buy slaves Adventurers and then outfit them to go on Expeditions to various locations.

This game is Lazy Fair, which here means that I'm going to be extremely lazy. I expect you to manage your own assets and keep them up to date. While I will provide you with the results of various actions and arbitrate disputes, it is my goal to do as little as possible. This is both to avoid burnout and to let you guys go a bit nuts with how you interact.

To facilitate this, please tag @ACTACTACT any time you want to take an action you want me to pay attention to. If you don't use the tag, and I miss your actions for the turn, it's your own fault.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Tank Tactics 3/6 still in the game
« on: June 26, 2023, 06:15:33 pm »
I was inspired by this cautionary tale not to run this game, to run this game.

The rules of the game are simple:
pick a grid coordinate and a color. put your tank there (feel free to copy the icon in the bottom right, or make your own. There should be no doubt what color the icon is).
You start with 3 HP, 3 range and no AP.
Once 10 players (an arbitrary number- we can increase or decrease based on interest) join the game begins.
Each player earns 1 Action Point at midnight GMT.
With this action point they can:
  • Move 1 space laterally (up, down, left or right)
  • Shoot another tank, decrementing its HP by one, if the Manhattan distance between them is equal or less that their range.
  • upgrade their range by one
  • transfer it to another tank within range
There is no limit to how many AP a player/tank can have.
Finally, each day the eliminated players may vote for their favorite tank still in the game- whoever it is gains 1 additional AP at midnight. In case of ties, no one gets the bonus.
If your HP is reduced to 0 you are out of the game and all your AP are lost.
Last tank standing wins the game.

DF Gameplay Questions / [Steam] Instruments
« on: February 15, 2023, 06:10:21 pm »
I'm trying to provide my dwarves with a bit of entertainment by assembling (at the craft-dwarf's) some musical instruments. However all but one of them require "exotic" components I can not place (a number of components are found in the craft-dwarf's  workshop and some are at the stoneworker's/carpenter's, but not these bad boys.) is there any way to know the whole list of components and their desired workshops?

DF Gameplay Questions / Steam: Adding multiple orders to workshop
« on: December 16, 2022, 06:10:33 am »
I expect I'm just having a dumb moment, but is there a way to assign a workshop order to happen a set amount of times? (so, for example, I want 7 beds.)
I only found a way to make one or infinite amount of an order.

It's that time of the year again!

No one created the giveaway yet, so here I am creating it now. We're starting a bit late, but not as late as last year, so that's not a problem.

We are going from the 14th till the 31st this year.

This is a shameless ripoff of Ventures by Moonlight, with a different combat system. Is the system better? No. But is it easier to grasp? Remains to be seen.

This smash hit from 2019 doesn't have a thread yet. So here it is.
Discuss your favorite builds, or the setting of Revachol. Or, for that matter, the fact that ZA/UM has released a line of clothing based on their game's esthetics.
