Mafia / Supernatural Mafia 11 - Game over! Town victory
« on: August 07, 2023, 01:16:09 pm »
You are interrupted from your daily tasks by the mournful clanging of the manor's great bell. Someone important has died.

As you are one of the more prominent citizens of the town, you stop what you are working on and head over to the manor.

The mayor's seneschal greets you at the door and ushers you in to the great hall. Guards mill about, and there is a body on the floor covered in a dark piece of cloth. The mayor and his wife stand nearby, consoling one another in grief. Noticing you and the others who have come in, the mayor hugs his wife a final time and comes over to you.

"It has finally happened. The great seal of the forbidden shrine has been broken. Evil is loose in our lands. And.." he falters for a moment before composing himself "and my son is the first victim. You are charged with finding out who did this evil, and stopping them. Gather in the Shrine of Ancestors, and do what must be done!"

Let's try to get some activity back into this Subforum with a good old Supernatual Mafia! Ideally I'd like a minimum of 9 players for this, but we'll manage with less if we need to.

While the Supernatural Set-up does tend to change a bit from game to game, you can get a good idea of how things generally work by reading through the previous games (or at least their role pms and night action results).

Mafia / Paranormal Mafia 27 - Game Over, Town win
« on: December 28, 2022, 01:17:40 pm »
By popular request, it is time for a good old fashioned Paranormal Mafia!

Been a while since I ran one of these (ignoring the Bastard game), so no changes to the rules since last time.

Min 9 players by preference, although I can lower that if needed. Probably don't need to specify a max given current turnout numbers.

Signups will go through most of Tues 1/3. I'll close them that evening (pacific time) and get working on the role PMs. Game will start Wednesday morning.

Players
  • webadict
  • FallacyofUrist
  • ToonyMan
  • notquitethere - Doppelganger Medium
  • Maximum Spin
  • Knightwing64 - Human Medium
  • Vector - Doppelganger Agent
  • Jim Groovester
  • hector13
  • TricMagic - Human Observant Guard
  • EuchreJack

For those of you not used to Paranormal, I suggest you read some of the old games to get a feel for it. And you can read through the rules discussion thread as well, which should answer a lot of questions on how it goes.

Mafia / Totem Mafia 3 - Vote Phase 3
« on: November 05, 2021, 10:42:39 pm »
Been a long time since I ran one of these, so let's dust it off and give it a go.

Totem Mafia is a somewhat focused BYOR style game.

Each player is an Elder of a Tribe, and each player has Animal Totem that grants them power. The Elders are in the Spirit Tent performing a ritual to help them guide the tribe. However, there is strife. A few of the Elders have conspired to remove the others from the spirit journey so that their ideas are the only ones being considered. The rest are trying to stop them.

When you sign up PM me the Animal you want as your totem. No two players can have the same animal, so sending in a few alternates is a good idea. Real animals only, please. And preferably ones that would reasonably be used as totems.

Game size will be 7 min, 16 max.

Players:
  • 4maskwolf - Town - Wolf Totem
  • TricMagic
  • Maximum Spin - Town - Pangolin Totem
  • Webadict
  • Knightwing64
  • EuchreJack
  • UselessMcMiner
  • Roden
  • Toonyman - Underhanded - Frog Totem
  • Vector

Quote from: Wolf
The Wolf, a renowned hunter that all tribes respect. You, however, have managed to impress them enough that you have been able to speak with one as a Spirit Guide, and it has granted you magic as part of its teachings.
Main power - Track - Each Spirit Phase you may follow another Elder to see where they go.
Minor power - Keen Nose - You will know if anyone came near you during the Spirit Phase, though not who or how many.

Quote from: Pangolin
The Pangolin knows many things about the Spirit world, and you have learned much having it as a totem, including the secrets of several magics.
Main Power: Digger - You can dig up secrets in the spirit world, discovering if a particular player is an Underhanded Elder or not each Spirit Phase.
Minor Power: Defensive posture - If you choose not to take your action you are immune to attacks in the Spirit Realm that night.

Quote from: Toad
A lover of water, you spent many hours along the streams and ponds of your home. There you learned to communicate with the Frog Spirit, and have learned powerful magics from it.
Main Power: Tongue Lashing - Once during the game you may declare the vote you just cast to be a Hammer as long as whoever you are voting has a majority of the players voting for them (including you)
Minor Power: Croaking Chorus - Once per game your vote may count twice. This vote must be on someone who already has votes on them and cannot be used in the same Vote Phase that you use your Tongue Lashing.

You are roused from your beds by a pounding on your doors and shouted voices "COME OUT! COME OUT! His lordship demands that the heads of all prominent families attend him at once!"

You hurriedly get dressed and head towards the Count's manor. His seneschal greets you at the door and ushers you in to the great hall. Once everyone has assembled, the Count rises and addresses you. "The time has come. Dark portents arrive in the heavens. A cold wind blows from the South. The Red Tree weeps blood. Dark times have come, and it is up to you to save us."

"There are those of us in this town who are descended from heroes. Strong bloodlines that stood up to evil in ages past. And these bloodlines have the power locked inside them to figure who and what is visiting this horror upon us." He picks up a scroll from the table before him. Mafia / Bastard Paranormal 3 - Game over! 4 Exterminators Escaped!
« on: November 12, 2020, 04:12:03 pm »
There seems to be some interest in a Bastard Paranormal game, and I have this set-up that I've been planning on doing for a long time.

Should be a good time!

Being a Bastard Mod game, you're going to have to work at it to figure out how to actually win the game. While this is going to be a Paranormal game, and the flavor and theme will reflect that, you cannot rely solely on strategies that work in normal Paranormal games to win this.

Remember, things may not be as they seem.

I'd like to have at least 9 people for this one if we can get that many, but the more the merrier!

Players:
  • Caz
  • TricMagic - Alien Exterminator
  • 4maskwolf - Alien Exterminator
  • Shakerag
  • Luckyowl - Alien Exterminator
  • webadict - Alien Exterminator
  • heydude6
  • juicebox - Alien Exterminator
  • IcyTea31 - Alien Exterminator
  • Jim Groovester
  • Toonyman - Alien Exterminator

I'll leave sign-ups open for a bit longer. At least through Friday, and then we can kick the game off as soon as I have time to do all the roles and whatnot.

Ok, let's get some life into this sub-forum again! Time for some good old fashioned Paranormal Mafia!

I made a few tweaks to the rules and roles, which you can check out in the post below this one. Biggest is that we're not doing Extensions any more.

Min 9 players by preference, although I can lower that if needed. Probably don't need to specify a max given the low turnout in games lately.

Clearly things are slow right now, so I'll leave the game in sign-ups until we can get enough people. I think we need 6 or 7 to really do anything.

Players
  • webadict
  • TricMagic
  • Caz
  • Luckyowl
  • roseheart
  • 4maskwolf - Human Telepath
  • juicebox - Doppelganger Telepath
  • Persus13

Other Games / Battle brothers giveaway [CLOSED]
« on: November 29, 2018, 12:51:27 pm »
With the new Beasts and Exloration DLC out, I've decided to kick off the holiday season with a giveaway of two copies of Battle Brothers + the new DLC via Steam.

Standard rules for Bay 12 giveaways apply. You must have had your account created before this post and you cannot be an escaped lunatic.

Steam restrictions also apply, so if you are not in the US region I can't promise that I can actually gift you the game. In that case I'm sorry, but I'd have to move on to someone else. (Stupid regions).

If you don't know much about Battle Brothers and whether or not you want to play it, I suggest reading this nice long thread about it.

Submissions to the raffle will be taken until roughly noon PST 11/30. After that I will throw the list up on to Random.org and we'll find out who the winners are!

I will PM the winners afterwords to iron out the details of gifting.

Update:

RAFFLE IS CLOSED!

Play With Your Buddies / Battle Brothers - Sellsword simulator [Update #8]
« on: September 14, 2018, 09:51:05 am »

Feeling like doing a new LP and I'm in a medieval mood so I'm going to do Battle Brothers

It's a turn based tactical RPG where we are a mercenary company in a low fantasy world. There are undead and orcs and whatnot, but magic is rare and we don't walk around with wizards and clerics casting spells or anything. What we have is a bunch of guys with swords and spears trying to earn a living in a harsh world. And, more often than not, dying in the process. But as long as we have a few warriors left the Company can go on and try to rebuild.

I should note that I am not good at this game yet, and my longest lived company survived about 40 days. So...it's more about the story along the way than the inevitable grave we're going to end up in. But that's ok, losing is fun!

My plan for this LP is to mostly run it myself with some reader input. You can claim soldiers, help with the general direction of the group, and can give input on various decisions the game has us make as we wander around doing missions to make money.

I will be playing on Veteran Combat & Economy, with High starting funds and Ironman mode enabled. I do have the Battle Sisters mod installed so we can have female soldiers (though the game does not recognize them as such) should anyone want one.

To start, you can help me Name the Company and choose a Banner for it.

Spoiler: Banners (click to show/hide)

There is also a Black crow on a gray background that isn't in that list. There may be one or two others that I couldn't find images of, but that's most of the options.

Day: 24
Renown: Reliable
Honor: Neutral (Acting Honorably)

Play With Your Buddies / Modded Battletech - Mission 1 Compete
« on: June 28, 2018, 05:47:56 pm »
I'm going to be doing a screenshot LP of modded sandbox Battletech. It'd be sort of a community game where forumites can claim Mechwarriors to customize and direct the skills on, give me direction on where to go and various important decisions to make in the game.

For anyone not aware of it, Battletech is a fairly new Turn-based adaptation of the classic table-top miniatures game. It's quite well done, and I've been having a blast playing it for the past few months.

People can choose pilots to claim. We are limited to 8 at the start (not including the Commander who I'll be running). But we can get more later as we upgrade our ship.

Other Games / devilution - Diablo reverse engineered
« on: June 26, 2018, 09:19:00 am »
Heard about this today and thought people might be interested.

It's a fully reverse engineered source code set for the original Diablo.

https://github.com/galaxyhaxz/devilution

Requires the original game assets to actually run, much like Open XCOM, but it provides people a way to actually update and mod the game much more easily.

I'm interested to see how this shakes out and what comes of it. I always enjoyed the original Diablo more than the sequels, so it'd be great to see  a more modern version of it.

For those of you who don't know it, Stonehearth is a graphical DF-like game. You start with 7 settlers and head off to build a new settlement in the wilderness. It's a bit more gamey & cutesy than DF rather than simulation focused, but it's fun. And while it is still in Alpha (and therefore unfinished and buggy) it is far enough along to actually be a game at this point.

So I decided I'd see if I could get a little settlement going with you guys. I'll run it like a normal DF settlement game where you guys can claim people and help make some decisions about the settlement and what we should be doing.

To start off we need to decide some basic things:

What will we name our settlement?

What difficulty will we play on? (Pleaceful (no monsters), Normal (Monsters grow stronger as the game goes on), Hard (Stronger monsters from the outset and getting harder)

What kind of starting gear do we want? (Extra food, Extra starting tools, Extra money)

What kind of settlement do we want? (Happy village? Merchant village? Military Outpost?)

We'll start with 7 settlers and will get more as the settlement has more food and wealth available. Much fewer than DF, but we'll still end up with a few dozen as time goes on.

The first 7 we can change look and gender, the later ones we just change name and profession.

To claim one, post the following:

Name
Sex
Preferred Profession (https://stonehearth.gamepedia.com/Classes)
Basic look (Haircolor and style, skin tone) - First 7 only.

Other Games / Slay the Spire - Deck-building to Death or Glory
« on: February 12, 2018, 11:30:26 am »
Rather surprised this game hasn't gotten a thread here yet.

Slay the Spire is a Rogue-like Deck-Building card game currently in early access.

You make your way up a monster infested tower level by level, fighting a boss monster every Act (3 total). So, rather light on story. But it makes up for it in mechanical fun and each run takes only an hour or two to finish. And, like many rogue-likes, it is the particulars of the run that make it interesting and replayable.

This is very much a Deck-Builder in a pc game. For those that are not aware of the board game mechanic, a deck-builder is a mechanic where you start with a small set of core cards and then modify that deck as you play, adding and removing cards to try and build an effective set of cards to use. In Slay the Spire there are two characters, the Ironclad and the Silent. Each has their own unique set of cards to play with (both starting decks and the cards they can add during play). There is a third class planned, but no information about them is available yet that I have seen.

In addition to the decks, there are also Relics that you pick up that will alter how the game works for. Some of these are minor, others can completely alter your strategy. Each class starts with a Relic that helps define how the character plays. The Ironclad has one which heals him for a small amount after every fight while the Silent has one which gives her more cards in hand at the start of every battle.

The game works by having each 'floor' of the spire be an encounter. These can be Combats, Events (which generally give you choices to make that effect your health or deck), Shops, Chests, and Camps (where you can heal or upgrade cards in your deck). Each acts also has several paths you can take up the spire. Some will meet up or branch off, others might be a narrow line all the way up to the boss. But picking what path to take (and what combination of combats, events, camps, etc you encounter) is a very important part of the game.

In a combat, you have only a few basic stats and your deck to work with. You have your health, your mana, and your cards. Mana is what lets you play cards, with each card having a cost from 0-3. By default you have 3 mana to use each round. You then draw a hand of cards (5 by default), play the cards you can/want, then discard the remaining. Repete the cycle each round as you fight the monster(s). When you can't draw any new cards your discard is shuffled into a new draw deck and things continue until you or the monsters are dead.

At the end of most fights, and often from events/shops/chests, you will be given a choice of cards to add to your deck. This is about half the strategy in the game, since what you have in your deck and how well things work together is critical to succeeding. Sometimes the best choice is not to add a card at all, since the more cards in your deck the less likely it is you'll get the ones you want when you need them.

Overall, I've been having a blast with it! Makes a great short session game and even unfinished as it is I've gotten 60+ hours out of it.

Sheesh, didn't realized I'd played that much.

You are roused from your beds by a cry shouted outside. "MURDER! MURDER MOST FOUL! THE COUNCIL HAS BEEN SLAIN!"

The news draws a large crowd to the center of town where the aged High Priest stands before the great Temple of Light. "A great crisis has befallen our town, a crisis that was warned of in prophecy long ago. We were unable to prevent it, but at least our forefathers gave us the tools to save ourselves from this horror."

"There are those of us in this town who are descended from heroes. Strong bloodlines that stood up to evil in ages past. And these bloodlines have the power locked inside them to figure who and what is visiting this horror upon us." He pulls out a scroll. "I call before me the following names...

Anyway, same business as normal. Min 9 players by preference, although I can lower that if needed. Probably don't need to specify a max given the low turnout in games lately.
