Not Dwarf fortress, another game not fantasy I think, I really not remember too much about

Edit: Nvm, found it, Ultima Ratio Regum, I should have tried to think where I saw it

Can't remember the name of this game but it was a top down shooty/explore-y style game where you were in a big open world, you could explore freely and piece together what happened and you slowly researched new things and had to set up defenses etc. Been a long time since I've played it. The enemies were some kind of insect like aliens I think.

Factorio, perhaps? Problem is that many games run along those lines, so if you have more information...

If it's particularly old, 2003, it might be Notrium.  Really stood out to me at the time and had that angle of mystery, story, and exploration along with harsh survival mechanics.

Echoing that. Notrium allowed you to gather parts and start building laser turrets and other such defense around your campsite or other places you often visit.

It was pretty great for its time, aye. Remember playing, uh. Everything except humans quite a lot. Might have ended up playing around with mods after a while, I'unno. Looks like it's going for two USD over on steam...

Not so much forgotten as it is a recent release, but does anyone recognize this game:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Some kind of mars-colony city builder. I know a few of them but I don't recognize the UI. Aesthetically, it looks like a colony sim Anno (or maybe just Sim City) - which is right up my alley - but it doesn't look like any Mars colony sim I know about. Hopefully it is functionally playable.

Thanks, that looks correct.

I had trouble finding it based on [City Builder] and [Sci Fi] tags (sci fi to eliminate all the medieval/survival settings) but it looks like filtering for sci fi also removed Aven Colony.

So I took another look at Notrium and while it's similar in art style it isn't the game I was thinking of. The game I remember had you inside some facility and you were investigating/uncovering things while exploring a huge complex. I'll keep looking

Edit: Oh wow I actually found it after some poking around games similar to Notrium in art style. Wouldn't have found it without you guys pointing me the right way though so thanks!

I got it free, and it's playable and pretty fun... but it never got finished.
