That would likely be the reason. Same way as sponges drown - the concept of drowning is completely meaningless for them since they don't even have circulation, but there you go.

On the other hand, zombified or enthralled, they can probably walk the earth quite well. I wonder if there are werewhales.

Urist McWhale has been miserable lately. He nearly suffocated recently.

Giant sperm whales are also pretty awesome. "The roc bites the giant sperm whale in the tail but the attack passes through!"

Seriously 3 sea monsters v. one giant sperm whale, and the whale survived unscathed.

Giant sperm whales!? How big are those things?

It must be the size of a city! If toady implements multi-tile creatures it will probably take up the full screen, you'll be able to have adventures in the things guts.

Nope, according to laws of nature of Dwarf Fortress any given amount of space can hold infinite amount of material. Including few... let me check... Including few 313557 uristogram (300 tons? humans go for about 70 uristograms) Sperm whales.

Butcherning produced 7000 units of meat BTW.

It's the dwarf who carried it to the butchers shop you've got to feel sorry for.

Then again that'd be a pretty galling task for the butcher as well.

Going by size given in the raw (eight times size 25M), they're slightly larger than a real life Blue Whale.

They usually yield about 1200-1300 bone and fat as well.

Mmm freshly broiled whale meat.

I'd have though a giant sperm whale would be much bigger than a blue whale, maybe the size of a cruise ship. It hardly seems that impressive really  :-[

Since you seem to know this kind of thing, how does one calculate the size of a sperm whale man? Or any given *man for that matter? Is there a formula? I only ask cuz I didn't know giant creatures were just x8 original and this is all great stuff for future science.

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."

That would be scary.
Aren't you glad that the Square Cube law doesn't apply underwater?

The fact they airdrown is disappointing considering they breath air.

Now if only you could get a chorus of sperm whale men (THE HORROR)
