Scientist have found aliens!

Scientists are trying to create aliens in labs!
It took some explaining to make it clear that, considering the sheer size of the universe, the chance is very high that there IS alien life, but we're not sure.

The second point was easier. If they're creating single-celled organisms on earth, they're hardly aliens, eh?

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

So somebody on tumblr tried to convince me that starving kids had thin privilege.
Edit: also, I found this gem on tumblr.txt: "Giving a random kid power just because he was chosen by god/the great wolf spirit, is exactly the same as invading a country." Apparently the OP was talking about Teen Wolf or some crap. The context does'nt matter, it's still really stupid.

What is this? The benefit of being super thin?

But that isn't even a privilege in all countries, quite a few would consider being fat "sexy" over being anorexic.

Well if I ASSUME that the person isn't saying something stupid. I COULD interpret thin privilege to be a somewhat confusingly said statement that starving children have "few" privileges.

Not in the context they were using it in.

They were saying that starving kids were more privileged than people who were overweight.

In other news, I went on a small FSTDT sprint.
My brain hurts.
I've also been trawling through that site, recently.

My grandmother suffered from terrible anxiety all the way through her life. She worried about everything [...]. She developed Alzheimer's Disease a few years ago and I'm convinced it's from a lifetime of anxiety and stress.
Judging from the fact that a lot of people, also such with a healthy stressless life, get Alzheimer's, I think that you are completely wrong on that conclusion as long as you don't have way more serious reasons. Correlation does not imply causility, and all that.

Trying to dispute someone's grandmother's condition on the basis that you don't have enough data seems both insensitive and rather silly.
Please read ZetaX's post again. He at no point disputed her condition.

Stress does mean things to the body and mind. Trying to dispute someone's grandmother's condition on the basis that you don't have enough data seems both insensitive and rather silly.

I don't consider it insensitive and silly, as cerapa said he's not disputing her condition. He's right to make that point. People get Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia without being stressed as he says, but I was wondering if a lifetime of stress and anxiety contributed to it. That's my gut feeling about it, I can't think of anything else she did that would single her out from other people her age. Alzheimer's seems to come from lots and lots of little things, maybe being very anxious all the time is one of them.

That said, to call me "completely wrong" because I don't have more evidence is a bit strong, considering scientists still don't know what causes the plaques to form and so forth.

considering scientists still don't know what causes the plaques to form and so forth.
Um, we kinda do. It's a failure/ mutation of several proteins. The reasons for their failure are varied.

I would however like to say that it might not be the stress/anxiety that's causing the conditions, but that there's an underlying psychological/genetical or other problem that is contributing to both conditions.

An underlying genetic condition, you say? It does seem to strike almost anybody if they live long enough. Those "varied reasons" by the way are what I'm trying to get at.
