I asked him to denominate the species, not dream up with a nicknames. You can call them whatever you please, but they do require formal titles for cataloguing. This is as much an expedition as it is a colonisation effort after all. A large part of the process of civilising a world is understanding and learning from it. Thats what makes humans so tough. We can adapt.

You didn't discover a single one. So no, not really.

Wrong.

As the only scientist here, aside from Haurk, who only studies rocks, yes, you get the title, likely with a side-note for Reggie since he speaks Latin and gave you the names. The other Migrants aren't credible researchers or even doctors, therefore they did not "discover" them. Thats the way discovery works. Even though human beings lived on the continent of North America for ages, and other Europeans had even visited the place hundreds of years before him, Christopher Columbus, as an explorer, is still accredited with discovering the New World.

Cool I'm glad you like the idea.

I think with things that do not look anything like bears, we started calling them space bears because you compared their body proportions or something to bears. So we all fastened onto that.

I notice the abomination has pincers and six spike covered legs. Would it be fair to say it's insectoid? I hope so because this allows a neat reference linking it with an ancient Egyptian solar deity, who was generally portrayed as a scarab that brought up the morning sun, which seems appropriate given it's mind boggling scale.

Suggestions:

Lava Centipede: ignis vermis (fire worm) - Common name: Salamander :D
Giant Abomination: Khepri Coleoptera (Khepri Beetle)
Space Bears: iratus venator (angry hunter)

That was actually what I based him off of, plus a few little bonuses to make him more interesting. It seemed somehow appropriate.

I'm starting to really love my players. Some of you are beginning to become rather clever. Well done.

lol I want a picture of a grizzled migrant astride a salamander with the caption "At dawn...we RIDE!"

Holy crap. That's really funny.  8)

Ok guys...this expedition to the pit is not going well.

Reggie is lying at the bottom with glass spikes through his shoulder.
Aneos lost control and is in freefall.
Cletus's last attached hardpoint is breaking.
And Yhgi isn't making much progress.

:-[

Does anyone have a plan that will help us not die in droves in the next few turns?

I have an idea for gaining access to the pit without dying as much. We might be able to collapse a section of the wall to make a slope. We've got mining explosives right?

Or we could buy/make harness so we could lower people safely...

I still think jet packs and explosives are the answer.  But that's what I think about most problems.

Ohh geeze I forgot we have a mining laser. ...We really should test that thing some time. o_O Just watch it will be a genie that snaps it fingers and turns the cliff into a set of escalators.
