You sit down and listen, hearing the tax collector go into a nearby room and pick up something that jingles. A few minutes later, you hear him leave the room and stop in front of the door again. The sound of something being moved loudly comes from where he is.

"What's this? A hidden room, probably filled with untold treasures?"

You prepare to leap at the intruder when the door opens. You can hear a bolt being moved before the door opens and you lunge at the imposing man. You bite hard at his ankles and cling to his boot as he tries to shake you off.

"What sort of family keeps a hyarim?!"

You consider climbing up to his face, but then dismiss the idea because you are too heavy and he would probably knock you off. The tax collector reaches down and starts trying to pry your claws off without getting cut.

Yes. Right now, he has a hand around one of your feet and a hand around your waist.

Well, we can do so to try to tear off his finger, but that would lead to some... moderately unpleasant circumstances. However, if keeping our species is illegal, moderately unpleasant circumstances are being led to by our being seen, so tearing off a finger won't change anything.

Hang in there, listen to what the humans are saying. If the bastard touches us, bite him.

You continue to cling to him, but you stop trying to chew through his boot and start listening. The tax collector is swearing loudly, and you can barely hear one of the parents saying something about squeaky toys.

You decide to change tactics, and start attempting to stop being held. You let go and attempt to scratch his hands, getting him to let go. You scramble away towards the stairs. The tax collector seems to be about to attempt grab you again, but the sound of the clock chiming downstairs makes him hesitate.
