Two/three player succession fort and Epic Saga
« on: June 03, 2014, 07:53:29 am »

Good day fellow dwarves.

I would like to write a new epic about a new dwarf fortress. However, in lieu of traditional succession forts, I would like to work with one or two other players, and pass the fort around. Then each would write about his/her years as commander of the fortress.

Options for mods/releases:
New DF2014
Masterwork Succubi
Masterwork Dwarves

Anyone who seems interested in the idea... please reply! And the saga will be a running commentary, using either a forum on Bay12, or using a blog.

Thank you for your time!

I would like to try this, though I've never played Masterwork so I'm unsure of what exactly all the differences would be compared to Vanilla. I'm not a hardened fortress builder yet but I know that I can keep a fortress running. Does it matter if we use graphics packs for screenshots or is there some kind of preference?

As a person who hasn't tried the Monsanto of Dwarf Fortress mods, if I participate, I'm leaning towards DF2014.

If we do end up using DF2014 I would prefer not to use graphic packs. Keeping it truly vanilla then. Any preferences regarding forum or blog usage? Also, any ideas for fortress names? Want to get all of the prep work done before release :)

Hmm...
Not sure on the first thing, but a few names that I am fairly sure are possible:

Clubblood
Devilbanks
Gemburns

I'm very pro Devilbanks and Gemburns. Both sound very ominous and !FUN!. I think we should then use the forum, and I'll copy everything over to a nice blog with formatting and such. Possibly, if it's good and !FUN! enough, create a pdf at the inevitable end.

Embark options:
Embark size?
I'm leaning a bit towards 2*3 to prevent FPS death, although I do have a fairly decent PC myself.
Good/Evil biome?
Volcano? River? (If we go with devilbanks, then a definite yes on the Volcano)
Any preferences towards taking the first year or two?

Embark challenges?
No food?
No drink?
Any other ideas?

General challenges? (Noble mandates!! :D)
No wood?
No digging any room bigger than 3*3?
No walls?

And of course, anything else you can think of.

I think the forum should work okay. Is there any particular advantage to using a blog? I did some randomizing on the names and found some I liked:
Lesastbomrek- Flankwhip
Kubukniral- Lancedportents
Limuldem- Goldenkeys

Edit: I like the Devilbanks one, as you say we need a volcano to make that work. 2x3 is fine for embarking, I don't know how much more my computer will be able to handle as I haven't tried that.  We could try declaring independence after the first or second year and killing the caravans.

I'd like the third year myself.
And my computer can handle large embarks (4x6 little lag, 10x10 no crash), but I say 4x4 or 5x5 would be suitable. Want to know why 4x4 is the default? It's not too big, not too small. If we're going for anti-FPS death (never experienced it myself, even with 200+ citizens), 3x3 would be decent without going too small (2x3 seems a bit tiny). What I suggest is a Joyous Wilds embark, keeping the threat of unicorns with a correct biome. As for challenges, it shouldn't be any more extreme than training axes. It will probably be among the first DF2014 succession forts.

Just ran a 6X5, no drop in framerate. I don't care what size we do now.

We can stick to 4*4 then. The fps death doesn't happen at the start, it happens much later on. And it's a bit of a hassle to atom smash everything that eventually clutters up your fort.

Although I do really like the idea of going Devilbanks--volcano--bloody independence, I agree with FallenAngel that this would be one of the first DF2014 succession forts, and let's not kill all our options.

That being said, nothing past the embark should be scripted, and what happens... happens. If we accidentally declare independence, fine. If we inevitably irk the elves enough to declare war, so be it. If we find a magical sword stuck in the ground, and one of us is greedy enough to take it, so be it.

So everyone is fine thus far with the following "settings"?
4*4 embark
Devilbanks
Volcano
possible Joyous Wilds biome
Using forum for general posts about the story, with the remarkable parts copied into a blog for nice viewing and such (something like this blog about Boatmurdered: http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/)

This is exactly what I've been looking for! I know you folks are keen to keep the number of overseers to a minimum but i would absolutely love to be a part of this. DF 2014 seems like a great place to start and using the vanilla tileset will help to simplify everything with the save transferring. The setup works well with me and it will be interesting to see how much *fun* the game throws at us in its new and glorious form. If you guys are interested in maybe throwing another overseer into the mix please let me know! and if not id be happy to accept a dorfing and provide journal entries.

I would be happy to go with year two, someone more experienced with DF in general should take the first year to set up, especially since defense has changed with jumping.

Hyde, keep watching this space. As the release date nears we will see who is still up for it. I personally do not mind taking year one, however do know that I am overly paranoid and the entrance to our fort might be a tad bit... unorthodox.

what are we looking at for our starting seven? Im thinking...

1) Miner/Mason
2) Miner/Rock Crafter
3) Expedition Leader/Trapsmith (Social)
4) Grower/Brewer
5) Grower/Cook
6) Hunter/Animal Trainer
7) Combat Specialist/Woodcutter/Woodworker

any comments or suggestions? We could of course bring some metal along and pierce into the magma right away....which would mean we would need a smith for sure...also what are we looking at in terms of water sources?

That setup looks like it would work okay, I would suggest bringing an anvil so that we can get the Miner/Rock Crafter working on some metal weapons and armor. Or we could use the Grower/Brewer for it since once the crops are planted and we should start off with a fair amount of drink there should be a fair amount of time for him/her to get some metal working in. As for a water source, some kind of stream should work because we can make a reservoir if there's certain months that it evaporates.
