"Hm? Oh. Yeah--"

"That sounds promising.  I will be sure to discuss the matter in depth with him"

(say this.)

Closer now: "The file-- it came direct from the Pontifex. More on that later... but don't kill grandma on my behalf, hey? She's gone through a lot lately." (Smile thin.)

She's willing to accept help from the Family she so desperately wanted to get away from. For some reason, this thought makes your anger flare forth again. "Not for now anyway, if sh--...I'll send him a letter and arrange a meeting. Trustworthy guards are hard to find, these days." Emma explains, straightening up and scribbling a note on a pad of paper.

[14 vs 7] You realize all at once-- Alphira isn't here. She isn't fanning the flames. This is your anger, pure and simple. No voice besides your own, no emotion artificially induced. This is all you this time. For some reason, this thought comforts you, and you tamp down on the anger for later, holding that energy back within yourself.

"Would you trust him?" Emma doesn't continue, shaking her head softly, "The armorsmith wants to meet you, and the Captain has been waiting for fifteen minutes now. I'm feeling a little petty, so I'm willing to make him wait a lot longer, but you do have a team to run, and exercises to do..."

"I will carry on.  After all, we are now at war, right?"

"...Compromise, then. A little longer."

Take a minute or ten. This was painful.

"The old and the smart say that compromise is important for relationships." Emma sniffs, letting you take the time you need. When your anger burns at a slow simmer, you call Zachary in. He steps smartly in, las-rifle on his back, helmet in hand. He has a folder of paper, and he calmly explains, "The Foster Brothers, Johnathan Shellton, Erica Hail, Quincy Black, and Eric Armstrong all agreed, Mother Alphira. They were already half-way through Crusader Basic Training, so we can rotate them in in about another three months. That is all I have to report." He bends his back in a half-bow to you, and you notice Emma watching him like a hawk, with hostile intent.

"Permission to speak freely, Mother Alphira?" He's still in a half-bow, his hands lifted slightly away from the pistol and knife at his side. His palms up, facing towards you, showing you he's unarmed, you realize all at once.

"You need to work on your whispering." With a backward glance, he makes sure the door is shut, then continues, softly, still bowed as he nearly whispers, "I serve the Great Work, first and foremost in my mind. I will not let any harm come to the two of you as long as I draw breath, should you continue to serve the Great Work in the capacity you promise... The Pontifex is of a like mind."

"There are some within my ranks that do not hold the same belief, and there are some who do. Please dispose of the file when you're finished."

Zachary straightens slowly as if expecting a blow to fall. "That is all."

Emma doesn't change her expression, besides a darkening of her brow.

Take up and incinerate the procedural file with a quick Inferno.

"Thank you for your dedication to your duty, captain.  I will keep that in mind."

Special emphasis on "thank you".

[14][19] The file burns in your hands as you maintain eye contact with him, a soft smile curls your lips. You can feel his discomfort... and you enjoy it. You don't break eye contact with him until the file drifts down in ashes. Captain Zachary dips his head once more in a nod, straightening as he turns to leave. Emma bores holes in his back until the door shuts behind him.

"I always hated power politics, but no man rules alone." The two of you lapse into a comfortable silence as you contemplate the ashes and Emma stares at the door. Eventually, she claps her hands, snapping you out of your reverie, "We'll be going to see the armorsmith next, Pheobe. Or do you want to spend the day in bed? At this point, either works for me." You note her defiance and the hand on her belt, where her holster would be, if she had one.

"I still fully intend to deal with the demons.   Please take me to the armorsmith."

"I still fully intend to deal with the demons.   Please send them in."
the pronoun game, who is the them here? Cuz it sounds like referring to the demons, which I very much doubt to be the case
