Molloch wakes up. The heavy, weird, earthy smell of cold petrichor is in the air. The rain is still going on, but has calmed since yesterday. It can even be called pleasant.
Molloch gets up and leaves his cave, and hops onto the balcony to see the fire, or what's left of it. The damp air and a full night of burning had reduced it to glowing embers. It isn't hot enough to dry the raw meat. He remembers how they had two pieces of dried meat left. He eats his before the other arrive and fight over the last one.
The others also wake up and start moving about. They are all hungry, so they go to the balcony to see the striking abzence of a meal. Molloch steps aside to show the last piece of cooked food available. The balcony turns into a little warzone. Expletitives are shouted, bridges are burnt.
Fish dodges the fight and eats the last piece whole. The other five on the other hand, do not get their deserved rations. This angers them greatly, and they begin to quietly protest, but the situation is quickly dissolved when it is pointed out by Molloch that there was simply no way they could split a single piece and and fed everyone sufficently with small morsels.
The squabble simmers down and everyone goes to get their water. Fortunately, there is enough water for all, so an immidiate, impending asphyxiation crisis is averted.
But the five of the seven shellpeople are still very hungry. Water will only smother their growling stomachs for a short time. So, with no other choice, they decide someone needs to go on a hunt while hungry. Mu and Zark volunteer for such a task, and Fish decides to tag along. Grabbing six empty bags, and retrieving their spears, they set out to find food, hopefully quickly.
Before they go, however, Zark decides to leave a bag behind so collect rainwater and adds a random rock to storage. Other two shoot him weird looks, but Zark doesn't really notices. He is not thinking rationally at the moment.
While the three hungry tentacle aliens leave, Shelbie decides to set off also. The tribe has no fuel left, and so no way to cook. And they will need to soon enough. He grabs his own equipment and moves out into into the rainy wilderness.
The three left at the base start handling whatever they can. Walnut starts crafting the pelt they have into bags, while Mollask finds and sharpens a rock. Molloch goes to find a large and clean enough puddle to fill a bag full of water. Sea is wild right now. Approaching it is not wise.
Molloch drops the bag of water and picks up a stone from the storage, then sits besides Mollask and joins in the rock sharpening. Mollask is quickly done and is exhausted. He retreats to his cave to sleep. Walnut follows an hour later.
Molloch is left alone. He stares around. He looks at the mountain again. It is barely visible through the rain, but the orange is still there. He sits and watches the rain while waiting for the others to arrive.
Meanwhile, Shelbie was in a tiny bit of trouble.
A Cloudtree found him sneaking into its kindergarten. This particular specimen of the small-plane-sized plantimal was an amateur mother, it seems. It had nested not on an high ledge like its kind usually does, but on top of a rock. He managed to steal a seedling and kill it. But the mother had seen him do so. Now he needs to run away from a small plant-zeppelin-dragon floating after him.
Shelbie manages to make it lose interest eventually. the cloudtree realises that it had left its other seedlings unguarded and rushes back to its nest, writing the already killed one off as a loss.
Shelbie returns, and Molloch grabs the seedling corpse is uses it as fuel almost immidiately. With the fire at least active once more, he quickly dries the raw meat available, distributing it between Shelbie, Mollask and Walnut, who had had awakened from the smell. Mollask and Walnut then each grab a raw leather and dry it into pelt, while Molloch retrieved the water bag Zark had set up earlier in the day.
While they were doing that, the meat hunting party was also in a struggle One that is arguably a worse one than maternal cloudtree. They had encountered a mated pair of Afternooners. A crepuscular species related to bubblefish, only much bigger, and specialised on hunting plantimals. The party weren't pursuing them. Instead, the duo had found them unknowingly wandering about in their territory and decided to attack. One of them alone could be deadly. Two of them were deadly.
Zark looks up to the aerial beasts wheezing and whistling. He was hungry and exhausted. Spear throws kept getting deflected off the animals' extremely elastic hide. There was one thing left to do, and it was to hide. He signalled to the others to hide also. Fish did not listen. He had an idea.
He got the attention of the male, which turned to him and opened its mouth to attack. Fish went into a hole between two rocks. The afternooner could not reach him, so it started to suck in air to vacuum its enemy instead. Fish held on, and threw his spear into the gaping maw. The spear went right in and punctured the gas sack from the inside. The animal slowly deflated. It's partner, seeing what was happening, retreated away, abandoning its mate.
Killing it after was the easy part. A stab to the artery did the trick. Then they started to butcher the thing. Zark and Mu, still hungry, went into the corpse and ate as much as they could. It was raw, but it was still divine.
After their display of feral hunger, they got out of the corpse, and four of them picked apart as much of the elastic flesh and guts as they could- Wait who the fuck is this guy?!
To the trios surprise, there was a stranger among them, stealing from their kill! They didn't really mind. There was more here than they could feasibly carry back anyways. Besides, after a bit of talking with the guy, who named himself as Mr. Lobster, seemed to had heard of them back at his home and wanted to join them. They welcome him into the group.
Just as they were done with the butchering, Lobster found a dead sacktree inside of the beasts stomach. They take the dead plantimal along with them. More fuel couldn't hurt.
The quad only manages to get back to the tribe at evening. Mr. Lobster is introduced to the other four original members. The meat hunters drop off their gathered resource. The evening turns into a rainy night and the tribe disperses back to their caves. Except Lobster, who sleeps besides the fire.
