It could easily be a rough solution to the problem some people have with the subjugated outbreeding and controlling the civilisation of their subjugators.

Y'know, just mod in the cosmetic skin layer property on the races that you don't want outbred.

Actually a race of skin peeling creatures isn't that tough to imagine. I immediately thought of snakes.

What does "creature interactions" means exactly? It has something to do with the reproduction of the underground creatures perhaps?

I think it means the dwarves slaughtering or getting slaughtered by the creatures, which will keep arriving from off-map access points in underground features.

Goblin roads run underground.  Is it possible that they would use the shoreline of underground rivers for foot traffic as well?

Also, if there are "world-spanning" underground layers (e.g. rivers) then you'd expect tribes of frogmen and snakemen to populate them, migrate through them, and struggle for control.  Salmonmen in particular might come upstream every year.  Don't even get me started on nomadic feral carpmen.  Dwarves that wipe out the local tribe might then find themselves living on top of a turf war as the upstream and downstream tribes converge on the now-unclaimed territory.

And I'd love to see some Shelob-style megabeast action in the underground caves.

I'd like to see a race that tame giant worm creature to dig them passages underground, which they use to invade forts/settlements/caves. Giant purring maggots?

This is going to be awesome.

How awesome?

So. awesome.

No more digging into the mountain to protect yourself against attacks. I wonder if you'll get a "the wall sounds hollow" warning before digging into a cavern or underground goblin road - probably not, based on chasm discovery currently.

I was interested in this as well - how are these world-spanning layers going to affect the current dwarven tunnels?  That would suck for a tunnel to intersect a layer and any caravans going through there are slaughtered and droves of giant bats...

I'm pretty sure the current dwarven tunnels are purely cosmetic -- I don't think they're used even by migrants, which are I think the only groups that actually move on the world map.  Armies and caravans won't use them until later on in the Army and Caravan Arcs.

Let me amend my previous statement, where I expressed a desire for Shelob-style megabeasts, to also include Shai Hulud-style megabeasts.  If it's giant, chitinous, travels underground, and is fearsome enough to be worshipped, I want to see my dwarves conquer it...

...or die have fun trying.

Right, I was being a bit forward-thinking, assuming that the tunnels were put in for future use.  It still remains that the tunnels may or may not cause interference (or vice-versa) with the world-spanning layers, being cavernous or what have you, in some way, shape or form.

Underground Month began quietly with a thinkering day, but I'm pretty satisfied now that everything will work out properly. First up is the framework for world-spanning underground layers with large populations, so that creature interactions can be maintained throughout the life of a fortress.
