HELP: Moving savegames to a new version
Note: Do not move 31.18 saves to 31.19+ . See "Do-It-Yourself-Upgrading" for more information.
1) Saves are located in "Dwarf Fortress\data\save"
Copy your save folder over to the NEW VERSION.
Your save games still contain old raw and graphic files.
2) Optional: To upgrade savegames to latest version, go to graphics tab and install an updated graphics pack, or just press "Update Savegames" if you don't use one.

HELP: Do-It-Yourself-Upgrading
To manually upgrade your Lazy Newb Pack to a new version of Dwarf Fortress:
=GAME=
Extract files from any version of Dwarf Fortress into the "Dwarf Fortress" folder.
Note that the "Dwarf Fortress" folder can be re-named to ANYTHING starting with "Dwarf Fortress" (ie "Dwarf Fortress" and "Dwarf Fortress v9000" will work)

=SAVES=
Saves are kept in "Dwarf Fortress\data\save". You can copy the save folder to the new version.
For moving from .18 to .19 or higher it's recommended that you start with a fresh game, or else you won't benefit from most of the changes.
You can backup your old saves for safekeeping if you aren't moving them over, or keep them with the old version of LNP.

DO NOT Install .19+ graphics sets over .18 saves. They will break.
DO NOT "Update Savegames" from .18 to .19+
Installing and Updating .18 Graphics Sets over .18 saves will still work with .19+, and should un-break a save. But you will not see many new features.

OPTIONAL STEPS:

=UTILITIES=
Put any utilities you want to use in the "LNP\Utilities" folder

=GRAPHICS=
Extract graphics packs you want to be able to use into "LNP\Graphics"
LOOK LIKE: "Graphics\Mayday\[files]"
NOT LIKE:   "Graphics\Mayday\Mayday\[files]"
Once placed you can press the "Simplify Graphic Folder" button in the Lazy Newb Pack program to delete all the extra files the pack may contain.
This is useful to save space or to re-pack to a friend

=DEFAULTS=
Copy default d_init.txt and init.txt of your DF version into "LNP\Defaults"
-These will be what your settings revert to when you click the "Defaults" button

=EXTRAS=
Any files in "LNP\Extras" will be copied into the Dwarf Fortress folder when you FIRST ran the Lazy Newb Pack.
It contains embark profiles and world-generation by default. (You may want to delete world-gen because it may be incompatible with newer versions)
A text file is also made named "LNP1.2.txt" in the DF directory. If you delete this file, Extras will be installed again the next time to run the Lazy Newb Pack

Ok, suggestion : move the "NOTE : requires microsoft framework" line on top, or right under, the DOWNLOAD V8.5 with DF 0.31.21 line. It's currently sandwiched between the line saying "new graphical user interface !!! " and it's illustration, which might be why I missed it.

Overall that post looks fine really. It's actually quite clean and joyful. You're doing a pretty good job with the LazyNewbPack, and it helped me a lot !

Thanks! I've simplified things down quite a bit now. Maybe a bit too much. EDIT: Hows that?

I want to make a new graphic for the OP in place of some of the text.
Could someone send me a .21 savegame with a cool looking fort I can get screenshots of?
Or would anyone take screenshots of some place in a fort with all three graphic sets?

i agree that it's a good idea, but either we would need that integrated into the LNP for all things (which would be painful to code and coordinate) or the stonesense guys need to do that.
i strongly suggest you go to their thread and suggest that.

*TolyK continues to work on secret project*
Considering Zwei is the OP of SoundSense, I imagine he has that covered. But I'm assuming he's talking about making said upgrade engine himself. Very cool idea.

Makes me think that I'd love to have an automatic update engine for LNP, but would have no idea where to start and probably way more work then I'm willing to put into the project at the moment.

BTW new LNP version incoming with STONESENSE, and updates to Therapist and Phoebus

Well, i just released sound sense with first version of updater engine.

It is actually not that hard: scan local directory and compute hashes, download manifest file from remote directory with hashes of files (i have ant task to create this automatically). Delete what is missing in remote dir, download what is missing in local dir.

I made small java library for this in afternoon (dirty hackish source here http://code.google.com/p/autoupdater/ ), c/++ implementation should be easy enough too.

This is without the soundpack, correct?

Cool, but we're not using C++.
...
We're using Visual Basic  :P but I might be able to get this up for the LNP with a tutorial and a server...

+ Custom World Gen
    - Lazy Newb World: Peaceful, small world, much less scary Hidden Fun Stuff, generally fewer Z levels.
    - To use this you must select "Design New World with Advanced Parameters" and then "Lazy Newb World".

Short recap: In the 0.31.19 release, as the first part of the Caravan Arc, minerals became (mostly) very scarce (along with a lot of other things). And per player request, in the 0.31.20 bugfix release, Toady implemented:
(*) Added world-wide mineral availability parameter

I'm curious: Do the latest releases of the Lazy New Pack already have the mineral availability adjusted (I'm assuming it would be set in the "Lazy Newb World", if anywhere) to higher than default?

I realize that this feature is mostly for those players who weren't satisfied with having very few mineral choices. But this pack is supposed to be geared mostly towards Newbies (just like the "Lazy Newb World" settings) - those who's unfamiliarity would obviously make it difficult to make such adjustments themselves. And, from what I understood, the features to make caravans more useful are still forthcoming in a future release.

On a related note: I could not find any explaination of the new "mineral availability" option on the wiki. In fact, the only mention I could find was the wiki's copy 'n paste of the 0.31.20 release notes.

I haven't touched the lazy newb world to adjust the mineral availability. Its a good idea, I'll look into it.

I get a Microsoft .Net framework error

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It still loads if I choose to continue, only none of the Dwarf Fortress files are detected. Didn't have this problem with the non graphical LNP version 6.So something to do with the new GUI not liking my .net libs?

Code: [Select]
Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0This means you don't have .NET 3.5 (newer versions don't count)

There's a link in the OP about that.

Cool, problem fixed, had a much earlier version of .net framework than i needed. The new interface is slick!
