Friend's family asked me to come over and fix their computer.  Apparently they tried to change their resolution and came up with an unsupported resolution.  The mom panicked and clicked around, managing to click on the button that keeps the resolution.

So she calls me up and ask for help because they won't listen to my friend. (Who isn't tech support but has a computer job and knows how to fix it)  I walk them through starting up in safe mode to change the resolution, with them complaining the whole way about they should just get a new computer, and that they 'tried safe mode already and it didn't work.  Since I needed to return a game to my friend anyway I decide to just go over there and fix it myself, since she is being uncooperative.

I fix the resolution issue (whaddaya know, safe mode worked), and she asks me to see if I can do anything about the ads that keep coming up on her desktop, and how slow the computer is.  I have suspicions and come up with a few different programs that appear to be bad in add/remove programs alone, a bunch of browser toolbars, and a handful of suspicious programs that come up with no name and a default icon.

She won't let me even attempt to remove any of it.  Because she's worried she needs those to torrent movies.  I tell her that those are probably whats causing the issues, and she continues to refuse to let me remove them.  Not even the odd blank ones.

Then on my way out she's talking to someone on the phone and I overhear her talking like I couldn't fix her problem.   

Oh comon, you couldn't follow my instructions to fix a simple resolution problem that was your own damn fault in the first place, so I came over to fix it myself since I needed to give somebody you live with something.  I DID fix it, and then you had me check some side stuff that I figured out is probably because you have more bugs on your computer than a month old pretzel that's been found under a lawn chair, that you won't let me make a token attempt at cleaning it.  And then you say I couldn't solve your problem.  You should be glad I didn't charge you $80 just for the pleasure of my company like all the local tech shops do. 

And with all that "I need a new computer" bull you were throwing at me they would have been happy to build you a $200 junker out of scrap parts they have lying around the shop and charge you $500 for it.  I know!  I used to work for people who did that!  And I would give it a week before you load it up with the same crap you have on this one.

At least my customers don't argue with me when I tell them I see things that should be removed. (Although that doesn't stop them from putting them back on. Quit letting your damn grand kids download games on your server!)
