A lot of Spring engine games/mods are free, too, and plenty of maps are playable between them. 1944 is pretty fun, if the AI didn't teeter between retard and cheating(unfortunately, this problem plagues way too many games).

It *is* a pain to set up, though.

I find NOTALobby to make Spring much more usable, it does only come with the mod NOTA but you can add any other by joining a server running that mod.  It takes some trickery to make it work with an existing Spring install though.

Zero-k does have its own lobby, so you don't really need to deal with any spring files (usually).

Similar to the TEW 2005 I posted earlier, Out of the Park Baseball offers their 2008 edition free of charge as a promotional deal.

To put it bluntly, it's Football Manager, but with Baseball. It's pretty good and you should give it a try if you're into management games.

Thanks for reporting this one, while i'm not really interested in baseball, i'll take a look to see what a management version of it could be.
I'm still enjoying the free wrestling (TEW 2005) management game, though slowly running my all female wrestling company into bankrupt :D

Not necessarily free but you should totally dig out your old copy of Jagged Alliance 2 copy and give the latest 1.13 stuff a spin.

Gog.com is offering Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics for free until Dec. 14.  Their website is very busy right now though.
