The Fisherdwarf Erith Kubukrodim from Ensebdobar has arrived
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:10:27 pm »

A caravan from Ensebdobar has arrived. Strange, they sent a diplomat the first two years. To my knowledge, he wasn't killed while he was on my map. So why are the mountainhomes now sending me a fisherdwarf instead? I'm vaguely insulted.

There's currently a bug that important NPCs lose their jobs when they leave the map. So when your civ runs out of diplomats, it starts sending other people.

the soapmaker Urist McSudsy has come!  Beware his deadly cleansing action!

I dunno, whenever the game tells me 'The X Urist McX has come!' I always think of the FB announcement.

Sigged. Also, on topic: can this fisherdwarf-liaison be ordered around or is he an actual liaison in all respects except name?

The latter. Urist McSudsy doesn't take any crap from some dwarven outpost.

I usually get peasant diplomats, actually... though one time I got a high master armorer and tried to lock him up and recruit him to my cause.  I could have used a good armorsmith!  Instead, he just sat in his little 3x3 holding cell... until the next caravan came, and I told them Urist McArmorSmith never showed up, I didn't know what happened.  In fact it's the mountainhome's problem, they didn't send me my diamonds this year.

And he stayed there... a good dozen years, living in the basement of my fort until I eventually abandoned, leaving him alone and forgotten in his little 3x3 world.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

This just happened to me (it was even a fisherdwarf), but last year the liason made it off the map safe.  My guess is that (if NPCs have non-job related skills in FM), his fisherdwarf skill is higher than whatever skill diplomats use.

That's what happens.  It prefers to send diplomats, but anyone will do.  The issue is, anything that leaves the map, dies.  Every year, you get a new diplomat and a new caravan.  New donkeys, even!  This was because at one time, your diplomat would get killed, and never return.  To fix this, the diplomat dies anyways, and a new one is generated.  It's a bit of a hax fix, but it generally causes no trouble.  Except one time I failed to capture an elven princess because he left the map :(

That is pretty cruel. If he cannot die of old age like he doesn't need to eat, he might as well be unburied only thousands of years after.

"Our fortunes rise and fall together", he uttered, never knowing that great empires and fortresses had risen and fallen to dust while he was searching the expedition leader from his lonely obsidian cell, only muttering how he didn't realise that they build fortresses this small nowadays.
