I love drawing monsters, even if it's not really for anything.

Does this look like stone tiles?

@skyrunner: they would look more like stone if they were either textures (for roughcut stone, which you can do with a bumpmapping tool before adding the lines) or if they had a bit of a reflective gleam, for polished stone. that can be done with a gradient.

Is it better now? I just learned how to do bump-maps in Photoshop, so bear with me >.>

we-ell...

the thing is, there, that that filter seems to be based on a point light. what you need is a uniform directional light. I'd recommend the Gimp bump map filter.

something like this:

But, on seeing the smooth version, that looks very nice.

Quick note from Shook McGeodude: Rocks very rarely have a "cloudy" texture (unless zoomed out, of course, in which case it might indeed look like that), they tend to be either really sharply defined or almost totally uniform. Compare slate to granite. Hubris has, incidentally, made a very nice example while i was writing this, so yeah.

@The Fool: Awesome hobby, great drawing. I really oughta start practicing my monster drawing-skills too, because i have a hard time thinking up genuinely original monsters.

@hubris

I draw with Photoshop. It takes a lot of getting used to. Not to mention it's expensive, even after a student discount.

A little experimenting with cloud filter got me the above. Is this more rock-like? The color is too dark, that at least I know >.>

Just a little doodle I did after being wacked with nostalgia about Keeping Up With Bay 12 (A great freeform roleplaying game that lasted about 150+ pages, it ended in august last year.  I went back and read through a little bit of it.)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I might do a little shading later on it, to make it look a bit better.
