Mercenaries was a great game with 3 factions :)
GTA2 had multiple factions
He has a pretty broad description of what he wants, but GTA 2 isn't what he's looking for I think. Try to keep games to the last 3-5 years.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

It depends on what you want really.
The Witcher has factions (two, possibly three?), it's an action-RPG
Fallout 2 has many factions, it's an RPG
Arcademagia has factions, it's like a huge CYOA book.
Thief has factions, it's a sneaking game.
Mount & Blade has factions, it's like a mediaeval FPS.

Out of these, Fallout 2 probably has the best factions, though it's likely you've played it. I'd either place The Witcher or Arcademagia in terms of factions next, both have well thought out and interesting factions. :)

Mercenaries: World in Flames immediately came to mind when I read this. Mount & Blade offers deeper levels of faction interaction though.

Would nearly all games fit that criteria these days?

The Gothic series is currently on sale at Gamersgate.

On a different note, I think you might be interested in the Geneforge series by Spiderwebsoftware.

Proof that not all Escaped Lunatics are Adbots. Welcome to the forums. That aside, I'll need a moment to see what good games there are like what you ask.

Apparently released less than a week and a half ago, Sengoku.  A lot like Europa Universalis III.  But significantly simplified and thus more manageable.  Also, restricted to feudal Japan.

Wow! Thanks, I just made an account on short notice, this forum is so friendly and to the point! Btw, I ment RPG's. I excluded STALKER and bethesda games because I already have those.  :) I definitely WAS overwhelmed when I saw 2 pages as opposed to no replies or one if I'm lucky!

We're glad to have you here and hope you stick around.  This community is actually one of the more friendly communities I've encountered on the internet.  And yeah...it likes to go all out with things.  The DF players have the megaproject mentality...the rest of us...I'm not so sure.

And don't be afraid to stick around the community even if you aren't playing DF.  We have a bunch of non-DF boards for a reason.  I've been hanging around the lower forums (especially Curses & Life Advice) lately.

And for RPGs with factions you can mess with...I'm not sure.  RPGs usually aren't that freeform.  Oh, they exist.  I'm just not sure what they are off the top of my head.  I'm sure the others know of about a thousand games that meet your criterion though.

Yay! New guy likes us! Stick around here and you won't regret it :)

I'd recommend Gothic 4 but it isn't really a great game. Speaking of Gothic, I think Gothic 3 is the worst of the series. I could kill a dragon easily but hey, if there is a wild boar coming... RUN LIKE HELL!

You should definitely try Risen. There are only 2 factions in the game. Bandits and The Inquisition. It isn't about Good vs Evil though. Inquisition isn't Good and bandits aren't Evil. You have to join one of them to do the main quests. You can let the Inquisition brainwash you with their self-righteous ways or you can work for a crime lord. In time you will be promoted and be more respected.

It's a cool game. Also 2 different factions means 2 different playthroughs. There are a total of 260 quests in this game and you can't do them all in one run.

By the way, I hope I didn't confuse you about those 2 factions. Game doesen't tell you which faction is Good and which faction is Evil. First guy in the game you encounter tells you how the Order (that's the Inquisition) sucks and after that you meet a decent Order fellow who tells you how Order is great. Order will attack you on sight and bandits will leave you alone unless you attack them first. The crime lord dude also cares about his people. You will meet bad guys and good guys on both sides. There isn't anything that is "completely good" or "completely evil" It's just like real life.

Not convincing? What about this?
