Archery is pretty fun. I got started on old-fashioned recurve bows, and used to have a little compound bow and a backyard target range my folks set up for me. It's good exercise! It's been a long while while since I used one though.

i always found bowmaking much more fun.
not that archery isn't fun, but it's much more rewarding when you're half expecting the bow to blow up on your sore and blister ridden hands

I only ever had a kid's recurve bow, but we also had an archery target in our backyard until some people moved in the lot behind us and we had to take it down, on account of it not being very neighborly to shoot missed shots at people. I now kind of regret not getting in more practice with it.

If you want a better comparison, I was going to say H.G. Wells but I don't know if he actually had that style of hair.
