Actually, the "devil" appeared after christian values and ideas were introduced. Before that the horned head would depict a male power and fertility and pentagram was a protective sign. It was a clever move to call these objects "demonic" and pagan priests "heretics" and "satanists" to fight paganism. And after the paganism threat became smaller, it's obvious that the "devil" became too weak to be considered dangerous.

Also I laugh at current "satanists" which praise the "devil" ("satan") and pentagram en masse while most of them don't know (or don't want to know) the true meaning of these symbols.

Sorry to continue the derail, but yeah. The founder of Satanism chose the icon specifically because it was offensive to modern sensibilities. From what I've read, "true Satanism" is more akin to pure hedonism than anything else (I guess like the Saducees from Palestine)

Hehe, remember Azrael, angel of death? An eye on his wings for everything that has been, is, and will be - and upon the death of one thing, the eye corresponding closes. (I think Christian legends add that he has four eyes at the top of his body, one for each of the Four Horsemen, but I'm not sure. That might be a modern addition.

Old Testament Angels are awesome. They also looked nothing like the traditional renaissance Angels; there was a very good reason why the first things an Angel usually said was "Don't fear!" or "Don't be afraid!".

The reason is because they looked something like this, with wings;

Sad what 19th-century Europe did to that, really, in popular culture.  I much prefer the djinni of smokeless fire to Robin Williams popping out of a lamp.

Also, there's something that appeals to me of the Jewish version of Satan - not the nasty, evil, bad enemy of God, but instead a trickster working for God going around and testing people.

Overall, though, there's plenty in every form of mythology around the world to make for very interesting stories, in all peoples on all continents.  Just so long as you get the real, unedited-for-content and un-Europeanised version.
