Or shrivel up, turn rock-hard, and go black if they drink beer.

I used to live in Washington (state), so we would put out beer trays for the slugs.  Weirdest thing...

..and here is my favorite enemy from the ultima series (before it was an MMO)

code:

[CREATURE:HEADLESS]
   [NAME:Headless:Headless:Headless]
   [TILE:'U'][COLOR:5:0:0]
   [GENPOWER:3]
   [LARGE_ROAMING][FREQUENCY:5]
   [POPULATION_NUMBER:20:25]
   [CLUSTER_NUMBER:4:6]
   [BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD][EVIL]
   [NONAUSEA][NOSKULL][NOTHOUGHT][NOBREATHE][NOFEAR][EXTRAVISION]
   [CARNIVORE]
   [CAN_LEARN]
   [CANOPENDOORS]
   [PREFSTRING:terrifying appearance]
   [BODY:BASIC_2PARTBODY:BASIC_3PARTARMS:BASIC_3PARTLEGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:HUMANOID_JOINTS:SPINE:5FINGERS:5TOES]
   [SIZE:7]
   [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:GRASP:punch:punches:2:4:BLUDGEON][ATTACKFLAG_WITH]
   [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:STANCE:kick:kicks:2:4:BLUDGEON][ATTACKFLAG_WITH]
   [FAT:3]
   [DIURNAL]
   [STANDARD_FLESH]
   [NO_GENDER]
   [HOMEOTHERM:10067]
   [LAYERING:10]
   [BIOME:NOT_FREEZING]
   [SWIMS_INNATE][SWIM_SPEED:2500]

..not that powerful, but methinks it's a nice addition for evil maps.

You're my hero.  Now get working on mongbats and you'll be twice the hero.

Also, isn't that image from the U6 manual?

I think it is... I googled for it

code:

[CREATURE:MONGBAT]
   [NAME:mongbat:mongbats:mongbat]
   [TILE:'m'][COLOR:0:0:1]
   [LARGE_ROAMING][FREQUENCY:5]
   [POPULATION_NUMBER:20:40]
   [CLUSTER_NUMBER:5:10]
   [MEANDERER]
   [EVIL][CURIOUSBEAST_ITEM][FANCIFUL]
   [CAN_LEARN][FLIER][LOOSE_CLUSTERS]
   [PREFSTRING:crazy monkey screams]
   [BODY:HUMANOID_FLIER:TAIL:2WINGS:2EYES:2EARS:NOSE:2LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:THROAT:NECK:SPINE:BRAIN:MOUTH:5FINGERS:5TOES]
   [BODYGLOSS:CLAW_HAND]
   [SIZE:5]
   [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:GRASP:slash:slashes:2:4:SLASH][ATTACKFLAG_WITH]
   [ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:MOUTH:bite:bites:1:6:GORE][ATTACKFLAG_CANLATCH]
   [FAT:1]
   [NOCTURNAL]
   [BIOME:FOREST_TROPICAL_MOIST_BROADLEAF]
   [BIOME:SHRUBLAND_TROPICAL]
   [STANDARD_FLESH]
   [HOMEOTHERM:10067]
   [LAYERING:10]
   [SWIMS_LEARNED][SWIM_SPEED:2500]

For everybody who doesn't know Ultima... it's basically a flying, evil monkey.

"CLAW" is not a bodygloss token.  CLAW_HAND and CLAW_FOOT are.

Also, just a matter of preference, but you may want "GORE" instead of "SLASH" as the swiping attack.  Just the difference between ripped and cut.

Whoops fixed that, thanks.

I think I'll leave slashed in... razor-sharp claws and all that, it's scarier. They should be too small to slash off whole bodyparts.

Regardless of the size, they'll still have a chance of dismembering stuff, especially with a 2:4 damage range.  I don't know if there's a lopping-off difference between gore and slash though.  Bludgeon seems to be the only one that doesn't remove limbs, but in the event of an upper body exploding into gore, some connected bodyparts may fly off.  Really fun with an antman, since they have so many limbs to spare.

The closest I've ever gotten to playing Ultima was a short stint of adventuring into Ultima Underworld: the Stygian Abyss, and after that playing Arx Fatalis extensively until I had to give it up for being so hard.

If you still have Arx, you could try the ass backwards path through the game.  See here for details.  It might be easier.

I doubt it.  I couldn't even survive by cheating.

I tried the developer bone-cheat at the beginning, which gives you an incredible sword and some of the best armor in the game, as well as every magic rune, and allowing you to level up to the maximum level.  I still couldn't kill a ratman to save my life (which, as it turned out, was exactly the case).

I then tried the "screw everything and become a god" cheat, which relied on drawing letters from the alphabet in runecasting.   I couldn't get a single letter to register.

So, although I had mountains of fun grabbing a bone, smacking a few pasty-white rats (texturing bug) to death, and then roasting their ribs on a magically-lit fire while jumping around and grunting impressively (couldn't resist.  Could you?), I had to get out of it because it was just too much for me.  I'm guessing it had something to do with my trying to make a balanced character instead of shoving every last skill or character point into one field, but I didn't feel right doing it any that way.

I tried, I really tried.  Arx is still one of the better games I've played, just because of how open and interesting it was. And Arkane studios has earned a place of respect in my mind for making it.
