DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: September 22, 2023, 02:52:04 pm »
i have a fort that was a bit slow to get going, (it took me about a year to even get underground because of aquifers) and so most of the fort is still above ground next to the wagon. including the tavern. i also don't have any sort of military or defenses set up aside from a partial wall around the area, no dwarven atom smashers, no IRON anywhere on the map...

Naturally i get a goblin siege. Fortunately the siegers were mostly recruits and the dwarves were able to eliminate them (albeit with heavy losses). sadly, because they were recruits they didn't have much in the way of decent goblinite.

[EDIT] now there's a giant. we may be in trouble

[EDIT 2] there is no longer a giant LMFAO

I don't think he's a werebeast, as he's been here for quite a few years with no transformation.  I'm thinking it may have more to do with having reclaimed the Fortress at one point - IIRC, that causes some non-citizens to be marked as "Hostile", even though they're peaceful.
fun fact! these "Hostile" entities still accumulate stress! i had a "hostile" siege engineer go berserk because of stress and had to dfhack him out of it. he went back to standing around where he was before. i've got a couple others wandering around the fort, stark naked, and I haven't killed them because of how loyalty can be fucky sometimes.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarves should take care of their owned items (repair)
« on: September 12, 2023, 02:46:32 pm »
i was thinking about this in my game recently, and my ideas are as follows.
-Repair Worn Item task at forges, clothiers shops, and leatherworks
-Disassemble for Scraps task at clothiers and leatherworks, for taking apart xXtatteredXx clothing to repair xtatteredx clothing with.
-a setting to specify what quality clothing is allowed to be repaired, masterwork is always repairable
-quality ratings on the repairs like with decorations
-being able to flag items for repair/scrap, like with dump and melt orders.

i have no idea what's going on. it took me a moment to remember how to find the combat logs and found some thirteen reports of fighting in the last two days. fix/loyaltycascade didn't work, there's a lot of beating up of cats for some reason?? one of my speardwarves is beating up a bone carver, a visiting macedwarf is beating people (and cats) up with a book, and now there's a fire breathing squirrel in the basement.

[edit] ok dealing with the fire breathing squirrel seems to have fixed any issues.

came back to DF after a break and opened up one of my favorite forts. Before I'd left I'd set up a magma pump stack to flood the surface in case of invasions and also the tavern. i had. too many elf poets just malingering, so i used it.
I'm also dealing with high stress, had a few tantrums, i've canceled most jobs to give them some time to relax, but now i'm worried I have a loyalty cascade on my hands cuz i'm getting a lot of [name] canceled [eat/drink/sleep], interrupted by [profession/cat], which i'm pretty sure is what killed this fort the first time (i reclaimed it).

....and i just found a dead elf in the hallway.

and the power just went out irl

DF Gameplay Questions / show linked building where?
« on: September 06, 2023, 05:24:54 pm »
it's been a hot minute since i last played dwarf fortress and i don't remember where the show linked building option is in the various menus  :o
i would pull levers at random in true Dwarven fashion but I would really rather not dump magma on the tavern until i've actually pulled out the citizens. On an unrelated note, if I incinerate all these visitors who WON'T LEAVE are they going to haunt the fort and do i need to start stockpiling slabs? (on version 47.05)

[EDIT] immediately after i posted this i noticed some levers in the library that just so happened to be labeled with the relevant uses.

turns out the reason the framerate dropped so hard when i entered this fortress is because there's an insurrection in progress.

i pulled up an adventurer save from a while ago, and went to check out a mountain titan shrine that was right next to a fortress. i think i spawned in that fortress, seen the shrine, went haha nope, and left to go save what ended up being a bunch of hippies to get experience.

i needn't have bothered.
the titan was made out of steam

So am I the only one who got the reference?
nah, i got it too

A new position is implemented, called the Occupational Safety And Health Administrator. They have the authority to cancel unsafe projects and insist on dwarves using proper PPE.

Fortunately it is fairly easy to remove them via an "unfortunate accident"

Unfortunately, if they die in any way that isn't old age, half your fortress will attempt to take up the mantle with new variations on the job title, even adopting personas and role playing with the theme. If you try to get rid of one two more will spring into existence. Your other dwarves will encourage this behavior.

[based on actual events i have witnessed in real time]

so i opened up one of my adventure saves and after rescuing a bunch of hippies i ended up at what i think was probably the fortress i started at? it's been long enough i don't remember. but there's a shrine nearby with a titan living in it. having gained skill i went eh why not and ventured in.

not only does the shrine have what looks like every written work produced on the continent scattered around the chunk, but the titan? the one that i probably made a point to not confront when i started?

it was made of steam. now i just need to decide what to do about all the books and codices scattered everywhere. my poor camel.

Add an enemy that runs fast and hurts people. Usually talks fasts and wears clothes painted with this eye-tearing color.
is this why i keep seeing scout tf2 players in bright green? or is that the reference itself

Dwarves re-enact Greek tragedies in your fort, such as Oedipus Rex.

Not as actors.
isn't that kinda redundant?

dwarves can and will curl up into a ball and turn into a stone wall when distressed/threatened. they remain aware of whats around them but cannot be moved or mined.
continuing in this thread, dwarves can also roll through hallways like gorons, knocking everyone on their ass and congesting traffic even further.
