What is the difference between dying and being reincarnation with no memory of past events?
'You', that is everything that makes you who you are, ends either way.

None. Physical death isn't the issue, it's the death of the self. The only reason our shells dying matters is because our self is (for the moment) inexorably linked to our body. If you could work out reincarnation with persistence of self (which would obviously require always reincarnating as a sentient being similar enough to your original form for your mind to fit properly), all would be well.

For that matter, a human immortal would probably need to resort to mindwiping themselves of a lot of day-to-day activity on a fairly regular (read: every few thousand years) basis in order to avoid some of the worst aspects of boredom; reincarnation like that could sidestep the issue by only carrying over the basic identity and perhaps a few crucial memories from each past life.

Is anyone else finding it incredibly difficult to avoid quoting from a certain Dylan Thomas villanelle?  :P

Well, I imagine that if a reincarnation system did exist, you when you are reincarnated you still have some nature left over from your old life. (Nature in the sense of nature vs nurture.)
Oh, well in that case, yea, I can pretty much confirm this to actually happen and be a fact as much as anything else.
Hereditary is a thing you know. Your children will have some of your 'nature', as opposed to 'nurture' when you die, so that carries on.

Good news for people who like reincarnation, turns out it is true.

Faith in their hands shall snap in two/And unicorn evils run them through/Split all ends up they shan't crack/And Death shall have no dominion.

Did I get it right, FlyingDice?

Yeah, I want to know who I am. Having to start over from scratch would suck.

I also don't want the really depressing kind of immortality where you go insane with boredom after a while.

Essentially I'd like to be on really good drugs for eternity LOL

I've been on REALLY good drugs. You may be underestimating how fun protracted inebriation is. There is a reason shrooms only get you high for six hours, because if they lasted longer, you would start having not-fun REALLY FAST.

Personally I'm going to try to create a bunch of inert clone bodies and work out a way to possess them when my body dies.
Totally cribbing from Palpatine here.

I would be cool with living to an extreme age, like an elf/dwarf. Like 250 years would be my maximum.

I was shooting for a much more obvious target than that.  :P

Also, "And death shall have no dominion" isn't a villanelle.

Though admittedly it fits the tone of my past few posts much more precisely, even if "Do not go gentle into that good night" more closely resembles the reality of the matter. And now I'm desperately trying to stave off contemplation of death shortly before sleep yet again. T.T

Sorry about that!

And I don't mean literal drugs, just something really nice.

Literal drugs is all you got, man. Your happiness is a chemical slurry stuck in a box of bone and wrapped in a sack of meat. Only difference between one chemical and the next is token, not type. All the same sort o'critter, they just do different things. Endorphin est.

But yeah. I'd be really happy with nonexistence. Sounds nice, t'me. I'd be equally happy with afterlife, especially if it entailed divinity. Then I could spend a few million years wreaking vengeance on the fuckers for the suffering of my people.

I prefer to wax poetic about my non-self-molecules-last-forever bit than anything else. You've all heard it a couple of times now, though, so I'll refrain.
